NYC for 2 nights, nearest Planetarium?

OK, so we're heading down to DC from New England in mid March (2 parents, 2 preteen kids) and, to save $, not to mention hassles, we're driving. To make it bearable for the kids, we want to stop over in NYC for a couple of nights, and the new planetarium is a must. (I have to stop in at the Met Art) Where can I book 2 adjoining rooms near the park for no more than 400-500 for both? (including tax?) I know... it sounds impossible, but are there any deals out there? Thanks...LaurieH.

The closest hotel is the Excelsior - it is across the street. Another nearby hotel (75th and Broadway) is the Beacon.
Both have "suites" that can accomodate 4 people. Also consider the Milburn Suite Hotel at 76th and Broadway. There is limited on street parkingat all three locations

Also try Mayflower on the Park, straight up the road 10? or so blocks on Central Park West. Corner suites easily sleep 4, and you can get your price. Ask for a park-view room. You can walk to the planetarium from there and it's a nice walk.

The Mayflower Hotel at Central Park West at about W. 61st Street is wonderful. Have you thought about using Priceline? I'll be in NYC in mid-March and got a 4-star hotel room through Priceline for $90 per night. If you're interested in it, go to www.biddingfortravel.com and read everything - it's basically the Priceline 101 class and I would never have started using Priceline without it!

There's also the Empire Hotel on about 63rd and Broadway and a Comfort Inn on 71st and CPW.

Once again I must recommend the Gorham on West 55th Street...you can get a deluxe room for $139.00 or a suite for $159.00...it's a small European style boutique hotel that is just wonderful...all marble baths, friendly staff...the suites have whirlpool baths and they come with the plush robes...great location...you can walk almost everywhere.

I've been in the Excelsior, I think it would be a great choice unless you want fanciness & glamour. Suites at a reasonable price, the location is perfect, and you can heat up your own breakfast.

In my experience visiting European academics, for example, stay there, as they can have a bedroom & a room in which to hold seminars, that's how I've been there.

I live in the neighborhood and am pretty knowledgeable about hotels nearby. The Lucerne (2 blocks from the Planetarium) is definitely the nicest of the UWS hotels, and should be within your budget.
Second choice would be the Excelsior.
