NYC Fodorites, help!
 

Hello! After returning from our Tuscan honeymoon, my husband and I are in serious withdrawl and need the flavors of Italia.

Have any of you found a fabulous Italian market in NYC, or somewhere to buy Tuscan specialties? We live in Brooklyn, but will travel for food :)

2 places I shop at regularly - Buon Italia in the Chelsea Market - 9th Avenue between 15th and 16th Street ( it is regularly mentioned as a source for all things Italian in Gourmet and Saveur magazines) and Di Palo's Dairy at 200 Grand St. at Mott Street. Also Raffetto's Pasta on West Houston one block east of 6th Avenue.

And Faicco's Pork Store on Bleecker between 6th and 7th Avenue.

There are several good places up around Arthur Avenue, in the Bronx, but i don't know them. Maybe you can do a search on Chowhound

Try Todoro Brothers on 2nd Ave and 32nd St, I think. They have a wonderful selection of all kinds of goodies. You also might try Garden of Eden on 3rd and 23rd.

Not sure if you are willing to take a trip to Jersey, but there are some great places right over the GWB. Bartolomeo's in Palisades Park and Fairway Market in Fort Lee. Good luck!

Thank you all so much! My husband and I brought back a few dried goodies (pici and sauce mixes), but are saving them for special meals. This is so helpful!

Budman, the trip was remarkable. We loved the Politian apartments, and will definitely be staying there again. I believe that Montepulciano is one of the most perfect places I have ever visited. Trip report is coming, eventually...right now, it's competing with wedding thank-you notes :)

Not quite Tuscany, but one of the best Italian deli's I have found is Faicco's - there is one in Bay Ridge Brooklyn and another in the West Village in NYC - great fresh mozzarella cheese, terrific quality meats and sausages, fresh olives & roasted red peppers, artichokes, I am getting hungry!!

I think the market downstairs at Tuscan Square (16 W. 51st) sells nice goodies. The food at the restaurant is also not half bad.

Without a doubt, spend an afternoon or evening on Arthur Avenue in the Bronx. You'll be surrounded by the "flavors of Italia" -- a host of amazing markets, specialy shops, and restaurants.

We stopped by Buon Italia after work last night- fantastic! The minute I saw a pannini with tomato and mozzarella di bufala, I was in heaven.

Just a note, the Garden of Eden on 23rd and 3rd is closed. (I live on the corner and used to stop in at least once a day, now I miss it terribly...) There is still a Garden of Eden on 23rd and perhaps 8th?

23rd between 6th & 7th. GREAT olive bar.
