NYC-first timers
 

my husband and i are going to the city in october for a business trip. we're staying at the warwick-has anyone been there? i read something about MoMA being under renovations and that some of the art is on display in queens? is this true, and, if so, how far will we be from there? just trying to plan our itinery.<BR>i'm very excited about skating in rockefeller plaza!

During the renovation of the MOMA, the artwork has been moved to Long Island City in Queens. It will be about 15 minutes by subway. For specific directions, go to www.moma.org

Yes, MoMA is in Queens right now. If you've never been to NYC, I would suggest starting with the Met. It is an encyclopedic art museum spanning over 5000 years.

The Warwick is near Rockefeller Center, Central Park, Times Square, 5th Avenue shopping, and St. Patricks Cathedral.

I hope I'm not bursting your bubble but I'm wondering if October is too early for skating...maybe I'm assuming ice....do you mean roller skating...not sure if that happens there.

Last year they opened the skating rink on October 20.

Joyce, if Kleins deli is what I think it is, it a mini grocery, not a sit down restaurant. The famous delis, Stage and Carnegie, however, are only a few blocks away. Can't help you much with other restaurants as I never eat in that neighborhood. As many people work in the area, there are lots of places for pizza, takeout sandwiches, etc. For better meals (even cheap ones) you are better off in other neighborhoods...<BR><BR>MoMA QNS is really only a 15 minute train ride away if you are set on going there. Keep in mind that only a very small (but well chosen) part of the permanent collection is on display-- about 4 smallish gallery rooms. If there are specific paintings you wish to see, check if they are on display. The temporary exhibits are also quite small. You would probably need less than an hour to see the whole museum.

Joyce, for Deli's go to Katz or Second Avenue Deli. I applaud your decision to go to MoMA, wonderful choice. However, don't do two museums in one day. Talk about sensory overload!

We love staying at the Warwick, in part because of its great location. <BR><BR>The rooms are quite nice, but not lavish. The lobby is small, which we prefer to the vast lobbies of most large hotels.<BR><BR>If you like a drink or two at happy hour, skip the expensive lobby bar and restaurant, go out the front door of the Warwick, and you'll see a bar across the street and a bit to the left. I forget its name, but the barman is welcoming and the drinks reasonable.<BR><BR>A restaurant recommendation within easy walking distance: Shanghai Tea Garden, 141 E. 55th, between Lexington and 3rd. We stumbled upon it one night and still talk about the great food. Let the manager (his son was in Washington University's med school in St. Louis when we talked with him) select a sampler dinner for you. You won't be disappointed.<BR>
