NYC - First Time Visitor
 

First time traveller, heading there in April. I would appreciate some tips on some reasonably priced hotels to stay at. I am thinking somewhere around Manhattan or Queens, or even Brooklyn.

Ideally I don't want to be spending more than £150 ($190) per night and I don't mind the idea of perhaps staying in a couple of different hotels. Also, easy access to public transport links are a bonus! I don't want to be sharing a room with anyone, as I greatly appreciate the idea of a guaranteed quiet night to sleep but I am not precious when it comes to luxuries, so something very basic is fine by me. .

In the mean time, you might check the Pod. I believe the Pod 51 has some singles with shared bath -- and IIRC, very few people would share the bath and you tell from your room whether one of the bath rooms is available. I've stay there (but in singles with private bath) and thought the location excellent, near several different bus and subway lines and walkable to restaurants, etc.

Yes, I happened to come across Pod when I was searching last night and it seemed like a possible option. I will do some more research today and try and make a decision. I guess in a situation like that, you kinda hope that the people you are sharing the bathroom with are considerate and respectful.

Not much in your budget. Looks like Hotel 309 in Chelsea is one of the few. I have not stayed there. Good location. If you are staying a few days, then the few places you can afford will book up quickly. Keep in mind taxes and fees increase the cost greatly, so when you see a base price quoted, it may not be affordable once everything is included.

AirBnb or Booking.com - you will find something in Queens, Manhattan is more expensive and is hardly better.
Pay attention that the metro stations are often not connected and you have to go up to the street to go 100 meters to go down again - not usual and not very comfortable after Europe.
Metropolitan Museum - is a must see!

Welcome, Zoso123. A female friend of mine stayed at the Y a few years ago. I have no recent knowledge but would that be a realistic way to go? Please share what you end up doing and how it went.

That price is very low for NYC, whether it is Manhattan, Brooklyn or Queens. There are also a lot of local/state taxes on top of the room rate which drives the pricing up. I recommend checking Booking.com or looking at hotel sites such as Best Western as there are a few of those around. Not certain whether any Y's provide rooms for rental any longer at least since the pandemic. There is a hostel uptown on the Upper West Side and you can check that out. Only know about it as I have driven past it and the young man who shot the health company executive had stayed there recently.

April is also school vacation and prime time for visitors to NYC because of Easter and Passover in the middle of the month.

“Manhattan is more expensive”. As a native NYer I disagree. Hotels in Brooklyn and Queens can be even more expensive than Manhattan.
