NYC first time visit

My husband and I will be visiting NYC for the first time in October for 5 days. We want to see a show and visit some of the tourist places. We don't have a huge budget. Any suggestions on where to stay actually any suggestions. Very excited.

Hotel budget per night? That is a pricey time of year. Remember, NYC hotel tax is high on top of the room price.

Show tickets are also high. You can find half price tickets if you buy day of: http://www.tdf.org/TDF_ServicePage.aspx?id=56

Before anyone can suggest a show, what do you want to see: musical, comedy, drama?

Do you want to do museums? Which sites do YOU want to see?

Perhaps a bit of research on your part might help you with some options of what to do.

Oct is into high season for hotels - so if you give us a $ budget per nifgt people can make suggestions.

For discount b'way tickts in advance go to Broadwaybox.com. It will list the shows that are discounting - and give a better choice of tickets than waiting yntil you get here.

For sights - you need to tell us somthing about your interests.

My hubby and I will also be in NYC in Oct for the first time!! Super excited here too!! Used Broadwaybox.com for Phantom tickets - $55 each!! Found The Mansfield for $283 per night - it was $275 and crept up - book NOW!! There are lots of very helpful iPad/iPhone apps all about NYC!! You wont have any troubling finding things to do - many free or have special offers!!

We want to see a musical Our budget for hotels is as little as possible lol

"as little as possible"

That isn't helpful - if you want suggestions, you need to put a maximum $ amt.

anneshan Sep 15th, 2013 11:07 AM

$250

We've had good results using Priceline for NYC hotels. If you haven't tried Priceline before, read betterbidding and biddingfortravel to learn how.

Long Island City, Queens is often suggested as a cheaper alternative than Manhattan, but only a short subway ride away. Verve and Country Inn and Suites are recommended.

We went to New York last summer. I had a hard time reserving a hotel for our large family and we looked at many. I bookmarked some that had favorable reviews in case I needed them for the future. Again, I am not from New York and have not stayed in these myself.

The Newton is commonly recommended on this board as a reliable budget but decent hotel. It appears prices are about $189 pre-tax, but the only weekends they have are the last one in October. Hurry if you want it.

The Gracie Inn seems to be about $200 pretax the random dates in October I picked. I think Fodors people told me it was less convenient than some others for being in Manhattan...but still more so than staying in Queens. https://secure.rezovation.com/Reserv...x?s=5CmsTHzDTN

The Pod Hotels It appears you would pay $285/night night pretax. http://www.thepodhotel.com/nyc-hotel-rooms/

Hotel Belleclaire was $309/night pretax, but if you stay 4 nights or more it goes down to $288/night.

OP will need a room from $210 to $215 "pre tax" to keep it under $250 total.

5alive Sep 15th, 2013 03:38 PM

Yes, Deb, you are absolutely correct (and I did say pre-tax). I don't think she's going to hit that $250 total in Manhattan in Oct.-Dec. We did press her for a number, and I am not sure how firm her number is.

OP, if your $250 is firm including tax, then you could stay in Long Island City (as mentioned above) or use Priceline or Hotwire secret sale. If you've never used either PL or Hotwire, check out betterbidding.com

By the way, I accidentally put today's date into one of the Affinia hotels and it went from $229 for today to $349 for mid October.

DebitNM Sep 15th, 2013 03:48 PM

Also depends on weekday vs weekend. OP needs to do a bit of her own legwork, I think. We are just guessing....

If you can get the Newton for your budget - grab it now. It's a reliable budget property. Prices will only go up for every day you wait.
