NYC, first time, this summer
 

I'm planning an anniversary trip for my husband and myself (27 years in August) and neither of us has ever been there before. I'll look up the sites listed on the "off Broadway" message, but have a couple of overall questions. Are July and August miserably hot (we're from Colorado) and is it better just to go another time of year? Is there a theatre season - or are there shows all year round? This info. will help me get started. Thanks.

Broadway theatre runs all year.

Yes August and July can be miserably hot and very humid. Moreover very crowded with people on vacation, esp families as kids are off school. If you have a choice, I would pick the later half of September or first half of October, generally much better weather and fewer crowds. You might avoid Columbus Day weekend which may be more crowded. Another good time is late April through May, as flowers are out. (but avoid Easter week in Easter is in April, crowded and expensive.)

July and August can definitely get hot. How about June? That way, you can enjoy the outdoor cafes and Central Park and window shopping without being miserably hot.

April/May are better months to go to NYC. Or later in the year - around September/October.

July & August in NYC is typically miserable. Very humid and sticky. Cabs have poor air conditioning and the subway platforms are brutal. Buses are fine though. Most of the natives escape for the weekend the second they can get away-usually Thursday night if they have the vaction time available, and return late evening on Sunday. Of couse you could luck out and have a week of perfect weather, but don't count on it.

July and August could be brutally hot. It isn't uncommon to get a string of 90 degree plus days with unbearable humidity. You're also coming at the worst time, as suggested for vacationers.

If possible, I might consider mid-September. The weather is usually fantastic and generally not nearly as hot as just a few weeks earlier. In addition, the city might have a bit more energy as it is fairly common for those who can to abandon the city on summer weekends.

In answer to your other questions, all theaters are "year round" on and off broadway. You can take a change and go to TKTS in Times Square to get cheap tickets, the problem is the best shows (usually musicals) rarely have tickets available there. I would go to Ticketmaster and pick a show that you would want. Of course, if a show has been around for a while, you may be able to get discount tickets.
