Need directions to Manhattan 43rd st btw 2nd & 3rd Ave from EWR area. It happens I can return a car rental that I had rented either in Manhattan a few blocks from the hotel I will be staying at,or I could also return at EWR and then take public transit to my hotel in Manhattan. Should I drive into Manhattan or take the public transit from EWR. ANY IDEAs/DIRECIONS for either driving or taking public transit? On a Thursday AM.

I forgot to add-we are a party of 2 with luggage that consists of 2 wheeled carry-on bags.

Directions are quite simple - I95/NJ Turnpike to Exit 16E/Lincoln Tunnel.

After exiting the Lincoln Tunnel you'll be right at 42nd st.

As long as you have a car I would just drive into the city and dump it - since the cost will be very small (tunnel toll and possibly a little on 95 (I don;t remember exactly where the toll booths are).

As long as the car rental is only a few blocks from the hotel the walk is no more trouble than the trekking on public transit would be.

Can't give specific directions without knowing the exact location of the car rental office - since most streets are one way and some are no turn streets during certain hours.

Thanks, car rental agency is 217 East 43rd st. btw 2nd and 3rd Ave. The hotel is at 49th street and Lexington.

Drive. Get to the city by 8 at the latest. I would be there by 7. Both tunnels will be jammed during the rush. Make sure the rental agency will take the car if it's not open. Usually they do and will mail you the receipt.

Listen to the AM (660/1010) for tunnel traffic. If Lincoln is kaput, take the Holland and vv. Don't really need directions - just follow the signs to NY.

If you opt for public transit, remember, you are going in during rush hour. Trains will be packed. Packed. Not fun.

On a weekday morning, I would not recommend driving into Manhattan unless you've done it before or are used to driving in a busy, congested city. It's stressful and will be very time-consuming. If you want to drive then take the Holland Tunnel and drive across town (preferably NOT on 42nd Street, where it will be impossible to make a left-hand turn).

It will be faster to take the Airtrain to Penn Station, then take the subway to Grand Central. (1/2/3 train to Times Square, then the Shuttle to Grand Central; walk 2 blocks to your hotel.

Another good option for you might be the express bus from EWR that stops at Grand Central. You might get stuck in the same tunnel traffic, but you won't be the one driving. Plus you'll just get on the bus at your terminal, get off at Grand Central, and have a short walk to your hotel--avoids multiple modes of transport (AirTrain, NJT train, taxi/subway).
