NYC/Curtains
 

Hi. I plan to purchase tickets to Curtains at the Al Hirschfeld Theatre. Can you tell me about the seating at that theatre? I'd like to be able to see the actors' faces. Thanks.

Also, we'd be taking my 14 yr. old daughter. Would someone her age like Curtains? We are seeing two other plays chosen with her very much in mind, so she wouldn't have to love it. The play has a 10-yr. old age limit. Why is there an age limit? Thanks.

Never mind. I just don't understand how I could have such great seats a the Neil Simon theatre even though they were row y, yet at the Gershwin my row x seat I need binoculars to see faces.

There are seating charts for every theater somewhere online. The ones at Playbill are not usually the best ones. Here's a good one for the A. Hirshfeld theater.

I haven't seen the show so don't know about appropriateness.

As to the difference in x and y in 2 different theaters, perhaps it has to do with the size of the theater. ;)

I've sat in the front row mezzanine at the Hirschfield and love those seats as I often do -- yes, they are close enough to see the faces. I've also sat about half way back in the orchestra. The floor is not angled much, so you can get heads obstructing your view more there.
I also would hesitate to take orchestra seats further back than row N which is under the balcony and I think seriously affects the sound quality.

Do not hesitate to get front row mezzanine seats in the side sections. They are far enough back that your angle view is still very good, and I'd prefer those over a row or two further back in the center section.

My next favorite seats which are sometimes available is close to the aisle on the two sides of the orchestra, between about the third and twelfth rows.

I nearly always go for front row mezzanine, but admittedly even those in the Gershwin are a long way back. As I recall the Gershwin not only has a lot of distance front to back of each seat which puts you further away from the stage as you move back, but I think there are also a number of double lettered rows before they start again with A, B, etc.

Also I saw the show in LA and I think your daughter would love it, as it is a pretty big, splashy musical. Why an age limit? I guess there were a few sexual innuendos, but that just seems surprising to me about the age limit.

Your seats are a bit angled to the side, but nice and close. That's very much where I saw Wonderful Town from in that theatre and I saw everything beautifully.
