I'm not an expert on the NYC subways, but it looks like you could catch the Q train at 57th St/7th Ave (about 2 blocks from your hotel, Mark) and ride it straight to the Coney Island/Stillwell Ave. station.

Does that sound right, NYC subway experts? For a first-timer it might be easier than a route that would require a transfer.

Also, the Brooklyn Cyclones are a minor league affiliate of the NY Mets. Go here for more info:
http://www.brooklyncyclones.com

It's the first time baseball has been brought back to Brooklyn since the Dodgers left in 1958 (Boo, O'Malley!) and they have a nice ballpark with a view of the ocean and the old Parachute Jump.
Boy, what a bunch of ninnies. Coney Island is a blast. There are lots of things to do, and during the day, it is completely packed with families enjoying the food on the board walk and the rides.

Does it get unseemy at night? A little bit. But not any more than certain parts of Wildwood, NJ or Venice Beach.

This urban fear thing can be totally understated. Enjoy the scene, bring a camera and have a blast. The Freak Show is a lot of fun.
Oh yes, so fun to galk at the sad misfortune of others! Don't forget to point, laugh, and throw pennies!
