NYC Columbus Circle Greek diner name?
Sometimes the brain cells kick in, sometimes they don't....
I'm trying to remember the name of a Greek diner near Columbus Circle in NYC. I did an internet search, but seemed to only hit sites that looked quite trendy, rather than more of the diner variety. Can anyone assist? |
It's the Coliseum Diner, I think. There used to be a great bookstore down the block from there, Coliseum Books.

Thanks for the replies!
I think it was the Coliseum, rather than the Greek Kitchen (although the Greek Kitchen looks like a place I'd like to try out). Whichever one it was, I loved their tzatziki, but when we left the restaurant I managed to break out in the most massive case of hives you ever wanted to see (or in my case, not see!). They were everywhere. We were on our way to Broadway to see Miss Saigon, so I stopped at a pharmacy and picked up some Benedryl. It made the hives go away, but I ended up falling asleep for portions of the show! I still have no idea why I got the hives. A couple of years later we returned to the restaurant and I deliberately ordered the same meal and didn't break out at all! |
"...A couple of years later we returned to the restaurant and I deliberately ordered the same meal .."
WHY? |
McLaurie - purely to see if it was the food that caused the hives or something else (I had my pack of Benedryl tablets ready). I never reacted like that before (or since), so I wasn't concerned about going into anaphylactic shock (although looking back, I probably should have been - too soon old, too late smart....). ;)

You don't mean the Cosmic Diner, do you? It is on 8th avenue a few blocks down from Columbus Circle, but not *at* Columbus Circle. Definitely Greek, and definitely not trendy!! :) We had breakfast there a few years back.

I was also trying to post that I thought it was Cosmic Diner also but I could log on to Fodor's all day.
I haven't eaten there in a few years but they had a good tuna melt on pita bread and Greek salit. :) Tina from the Bronx |
I also think it must have been the Cosmic Coffee Shop, which used to be a block or so south of Columbus Circle. It is now the Cosmic Diner & has moved to 8th Ave around 52nd St.

Thanks, spring (I am not the OP). I was so confused when I looked at the current map, b/c I remembered it being *much* closer to Columbus Circle when we went there. I guess it has moved up the street in the intervening years.
|
Exactly! Cosmic did move. It used to be right off of Columbus Circle.

I'll be in New York in December, so I'll have to check out the area.
I remember that we all enjoyed our food, and the atmosphere was almost family-like, in that the waiters (seemed as if there were no women serving when we were there), treated us almost as if we were regulars. Thanks! |
You prob. got the hives bec. you were making a bee line to the theater.
|
Sobster - Of course! Why didn't I think of that!
