NYC clothes shopping for teenage boy

We'll be in New York City in a few weeks to do some eating, shopping, and see a show. Our fashion-conscious 16-year-old son would like to part ways with us when we get off the train at Penn Station, and do a few hours of shopping on his own in the Herald Square, Chelsea, and/or Village areas for stylishly hip (but not-too-expensive) clothing. My first thought was H&M at Herald Square. Any thoughts about other places with that sort of clothing for older teens and young men?

Hello, Balto Traveler. This is Christine Gonos, born and raised in Pikesville. My daughter lives in Manhattan and I have noticed A LOT of teens hanging out on Broadway, just south of Houston Street. There are so many clothing stores in this neighborhood with the kind of cool gear that teens just love. (You should see all the teens hanging out in front of Prada--just wishing, not really buying.)

Agreed. I'd give Herald Square a pass and head to Union Square. While the Diesel store might be a bit pricey, he can head down Broadway (the first few blocks are great for sneakers) and keep on walking till he hits Canal St. Along the way (it's about a 20-block stretch) he'll find plenty of places to pop into. YRB is a good one; there's an H&M, too. I wouldn't stray too far from Broadway, though, because most of the places on the side-streets (Prince, Spring, etc.) are likely to be high-end boutiques.
