NYC...CHEAP CHEAP CHEAP
 

A friend and I plan to take a trip to NYC in the early fall and are doing so on a very tight budget. We are driving across Canada and taking a small detour to the Big Apple. Prefer to stay in hostels, or cheap hotels. Will have a car, and are a bit worried about having it stolen (like cousins recently did). Prefer to stay in a reasonably safe neighborhood. Interested in knowing DON`T MISS things--The Met, a good Broadway show, Tavern on the Green , the whole tourist-y scene. Anybody know of some good budget tips?

boy, do i have a message for you! the YMCA in manhattan is under 50 dollars a day, 1 block from united nations building! book in advance, i do not have address, or phone but directory assistance can help you out. my freind and husband stayed in it. it is private room w/bunk beds, clean and nice, can use the pool and the weight rooms too! cheap cheap cheap!

The Staten Island Ferry used to be a great deal (25 cents). The view of the city was spectacular while taking the ferry and was even better for 25 cents! You can catch the ferry from Battery Park to Staten Island and back. Since then, the prices has gone up to 50 cents (I think). However, beware of shady characters (as always in NY). Enjoy the boat ride!

Check out the New York City website- through that you can learn about lots of free or low-cost activities. You can visit the New York Stock Exchange for free and go to the TKTS booth in Times Square or World Trade Center for discounted tickets to Broadway shows. Just walking around NYC is interesting and that's free. Also you can watch the Today show being filmed at Rockefeller Center if you get up early in the morning. Time Out New York magazine is also a great source of information. You'll have a great time

Just got back from NYC - you are bound to have better weather than I did! Play not to miss - RENT! It's very topical with energetic performances. They sell the first two rows each night for only $20. However, kids camp out all day to get these primo seats. We stood in the cancellation line for 1 1/2 hours and got great seats ($75). If possible, buy your tickets in advance.

See "Blue Man Group" in the Village. It is a wild time and a bit less expensive than a Broadway show. Also, Central Park is beautiful in the fall. You can spend a few hours getting lost and enjoying the sights. The best part is that it's free. The Met is right by the park on 81st and Fifth Avenue. It's a beautiful museum. Have a great time!
