Dear KellBell:
I recommend visiting Central Park during the day.. seeing the Ramble and the Great Lawn, and the Wollman Rink. The only place I would visit at night would be the restaurant Tavern on the Green (on Central Park West):

You may want to skip the carriage ride.
The rate is ridiculous. You could just as well walk (the same route at the same speed). It's more a romantic sort of endeavor (even then, not very)and those carriages could not be more "tacky".
We went once. The sign on the side of the carriage was printed in HUGE letters 30 MINUTES. When we returned, with no commentary whatsoever, 18 minutes later, and I inquired as to why the ride was so short, the driver pointed to teeny tiny print "up to" ahead of the 30 MINUTES.
Real curious - how did your hotel rate go down $100?

djkbooks:
I think we are going to skip the walk or ride at night and save it for some time on Monday.
I have NO idea why/how our rate dropped! We are staying at the Ameritania and when we booked in early November, they quoted us a rate of $237 per night. We just called back anonymously and asked for their availability and rates on our dates. They still had rooms available and for $137/night. We rebooked!

Skatedancer has a good point. I have had the same experience - thinking I was headed east and ending up in a circle. It can be very confusing in the daytime. There is no good reason to be there at night.
