NYC breakfast or brunch HELP!!
 

Will be in the city on Sunday Sept 12. Looking for a reasonabley priced and really good brunch or breakfast in the Times Square area. Also any ideas of things to do with older people on a saturday night in the same area. Any help is appreciated.

A really great and fun brunch -- B.B.King's Gospel brunch on 42nd street.
From a reasonably priced menu: Rachel's on 9th Ave. between 43rd and 44th. Or Trattoria Danielli on 8th between 45th and 46th.

Not sure what you mean by "older people" but the piano bar at Don't Tell Mama on 46th is a heck of lot of fun.

What's the name of that Scandinavian place that has the incredible (but pricey) brunch?

JEF, I'm not sure "older people" hang out in Times Square. Or at least not for very long. Perhaps take the subway to Grand Central and visit the food court. That's an awful recommendation but I'm not sure how to respond.

What about one of those boats that circle the island? That would be fun at night.

Breakfast or brunch at Norma's in the Parker Meridien (not exactly TS 57th & 6th) or Brooklyn Diner (also on west 57th). I'm sure there are also coffee shops around. I just can't think of any other breakfast places in that area.

For brunch, BB King's has a gospel brunch with southern food on Sundays and Iridium has a jazz brunch buffet.

As for Sat. night, what about the theater ;;)? If not, a nice dinner (Foley Fish House in the Renaissance Hotel with a nice view), a comedy club (Caroline's on Broadway is in the area), a music venue (Birdland for jazz, a piano bar or cabaret-several on 46th beween 8th & 9th)

If you're going to be there on a Fri afternoon, you must take them to Birdland at 5:30pm for a fantastic big band. They'll love it.

The place Tandoori Girl means is Aquavit. Not sure they'd appreciate it.

Are they mobile? Can you get in a cab? This is an instance where I think Tavern on the Green might be in order, maybe for brunch.

Yes they are mobile and can get around.

My vote goes for the Algonquin for Saturday night. Lovely, intimate venue.

Jack Rose probably has a decent brunch, and they also have music upstairs.

Of course, theater is what most people do in Times Square on a Saturday night.

For a very reasonably priced brunch, I strongly recommend West Bank Cafe on 42nd Street, just west of 9th Avenue.

Bugswife, has Jack Rose reopened? I was disappointed to see it closed and a real estate sign on the window in April.

Gee, I hang out with a number of people over 70 including my partner. You all make them sound like fuddy duddies waiting for the graveyard. Some of them love jazz clubs, gospel brunches, and yes, even really lively noisy trendy places. But I guess you know these people best, JEF.

I sat next to two couples all in their 80's, I expect, at the wildly campy Marie's Crisis in the village one night, and I was only worried that if they had any more fun they'd have heart attacks. They were loving it.

I did not say they were "fuddy duddy", just trying to get some ideas other than theatre and bars.

Ooops. JEF, I didn't mean that you said that. I was referring to some of the responses which somehow made them seem like people who wouldn't enjoy much of anything except watching paint dry.
But there are also some good suggestions here.

Go for brunch at The View on top the Marquis. Everyone likes that, especially older people.

Patrick -No way! They closed? I haven't been there since last winter. Loved my table by the fireplace. Also, saw a great singer in the cabaret upstairs. What a shame. I guess their overhead was prohibitive. By the way, i know you will appreciate this--we are seeing Kristen Chenowith at Carnegie Hall tonight! and, just got tickets to see Christine Noll in Mack & Mabel at the Goodspeed in CT. I think you need to be a reverse snowbird.

Well, at least I got to see Kristen Cheowith in that fabulous Candide in Concert at NY Philharmonic in May.
But I love Mack and Mabel (well at least the score). Only Goodspeed is crazy enough to stage it -- but I do love their work.
And yes, you need to take a stroll down 8th Avenue and see what is where Jack Rose was. I wasn't too surprised. I loved it, but it was always empty when we went.
