NYC boutique hotel
We'd like to stay in a luxurious/modern boutique property anywhere in the Soho or Midtown, Broadway area. We'll be there again in July for a long weekend. Somewhere that is close to good breakfast spots would be great. Thank you.

Be forewarned that "modern/boutique" in NYC often equates to tiny rooms. Many of these places are rehabbed older buildings where they've put style over function/comfort. I think if you're willing to pay more, there may be upgrades like a junior suite etc. that can make these places more palatable.
The website buongiorno's given you is for the schrager group who indeed started the "boutique" hotel trend, at least in NYC. These places are often the worst as far as small rooms. In Soho, which I assume you realize is all the way downtown, the Soho Grand, the Mercer and 60 Thompson are the options. I think that might be a fun place to stay. There are plenty of good breakfast places. The Cupping Room and Once Upon a Tart are 2 popular Soho places. The Red Flame coffee shop is across from the Royalton. Nothing special, but a good, clean option. On that same block, the Sofitel is a "smaller" hotel with modern decor. Not what you might be thinking of in terms of boutique, but much better than many of the others.
Since you're coming in July, may I suggest staying in an area nearer Central Park might be nicer. Le Parker Meridien is not a small hotel, but it's very modern decor and it has an indoor pool with a great view. It's also right near the Park and Fifth Ave. The Library Hotel is a small hotel (with small rooms), not nec. the most modern decor, but they have some outdoor space and a glassed in atrium that might be nice in summer (if it isn't broiling hot).libraryhotel.com |
I can HIGHLY recommend 60 Thompson. Staff was helpful and polite, great location, rooms on the small side but very comfortable, and the baths are very nice.

I haven't been, but I got great recommendations from friends for a number of hotels in the HK Hotel chain, a group of boutique hotels in New York. I hear the Hotel Gansevoort in the meatpacking district is especially luxurious. Take a look at www.hkhotels.com.
