I thought Lindy's was way over rated but really enjoyed the piece I had at the Broadway or Brooklyn Diner (don't remember exact name)on approx. W. 59th. That was a couple of yrs ago so I'm only assuming it's still there. Don't let the diner name fool you. They want approximately $12 for a hot dog! Not the typical diner fare we see in the midwest.

Imagine my disappointment a few months ago when I couldn't find any NY style cheesecake in the Village or SoHo. I did find one place that served California Style (not even sure what that is and I'm from Los Angeles). We finally wound up at Lindy's paying for over-priced cheesecake, but we had to have it.
Make sure to indulge in the hot peanuts on the street corners - they're the best! And you can even bring them home and reheat them in the microwave to relive the NY experience.

Hi Jacky:
I agree with Howard about Junior's cheescake. A trip to their restaurant in Brooklyn for lunch is doable and an experieince(F train to Jay Street--A train to Jay ST-Boro Hall from the west side of Manhattan or 2or 4 train from the East side.)
However, I am also partial to cheesecake from many of the Greek diners all over NYC. Especially with strawberries on top! YUM! Enjoy!

Junior's makes a good cheesecake but why not purchase a whole cake and have a slice everytime you are in your hotel room. If you ever get to the Upper WEst Side go into Zabar's (80th and Broadway). You can buy a pretty good cheesecake at that location. Now if you want to make your own cheesecake here is a recipe you can try:
2 1/2 pounds cream cheese (I use Philadelphia brand)
1 3/4 cups granulated sugar
3 tablespoons all purpose flour
1/4 teaspoon salt
1/2 teaspoon grated lemon rind
1/2 teaspoon grated orange rind
2 egg yolks
5 large eggs
1/4 cup heavy cream
Heat oven to 475 degrees
In large bowl beat cream cream until light and fluffy
Mix in sugar, flour, salt, beat until smooth.
Add rinds, yolks and whole eggs, one at a time, beating after each until well blended.
Stir in heavy cream, mix only briefly.
Put a crust in bottom of a spring form pan (I usually use crushed graham crackers) Pour in mixture and bake 15 minutes at 475 and then at 200 for another hour. Remove and let cool. Chill before serving. Tough to ruin this cake. If oven temperature is not very even you might find the top of the cake will crack. You can hide it with strawberries (fresh) with a strawberry glaze or with a can of cherry pie filling. Will make a 10 inch cake.

I LOVE CHEESECAKE. My father made the best one around, his recipe was similar to yours. However, a tip to avoid the cracks on the top....
put a pan of water in the oven when you are baking your cheesecake and the moisture will surround it while baking. Also, when the cheesecake is done, don't take it out immediately. Just open the oven door a crack and leave it that way for about 5 minutes to let the hot air escape and the cheesecake REST before taking it out.
