nyc bars for locals
What bars near Greenwich Village and lower west side are frequented by locals?
|
In the nicest possible way, my response is simply : the ones where they can hang out and relax with each other.
|
Why would you want to do that?
|
In the nicest possible way, bellastar, why did you take the time to respond to the question?
This IS a travel forum, after all, and the poster appears to be looking for something off the beaten tourist track. If you have a suggestion, share it. But if not then skip it, especially if your local watering holes eschew out of towners. |
I am not a bar person but with a two block radius of our apartment are over 12 bars. Please state age, sexual orientation, or upscale, dive bar, beer bar, frat party, etc.
There is a bar called Mars Bar, it used be shown on the opening cresits of NYPD Blue. A few weeks ago as I appraoched it with a friend from out of town and I said, "That place serves testerone, not beer." As we passed there was a guy sitting in the window who looked like an old hit man. If that is what you are looking for it on 2nd Ave and First Street otherwise please be more specific. |
My only point is, obviously, if a bar is discussed on an international travel forum, it's not really a locals only place, is it? I think it's best to follow Aduchamp's suggestions along all these lines. Plus, I'm not really sure what an "old hit man" looks like, anyway.
|
The only obvious thing about your posts are their unnecessarily unwelcoming demeanor. Which points to my original question, why bother responding if you have nothing to offer the OP?
The world, including NYC, is filled with bars and restaurants that welcome both locals and non, as well as those that cater only to tourists or only to locals. It took fewer than 10 seconds to click on the OP's name and determine she wasn't looking for a gay frat bar. Straight up ugly replies from both of you. |
Plus, I'm not really sure what an "old hit man" looks like, anyway.
It was an old guy who looked like a paid killer. It is funny but sometims you can spot NYC cops and guys who are conencted by their comportment, dress (I don't mean uniforms), walk. |
Oxgirl-
First, my original post was self-deprecaitng humor. Second, I am highly ipressed by your power of deduction. I went to Debj's profile and it has a Fodor's suitcase for her picture and her profile starts and ends with that the fact she has been a member since 2007. How you knew anything by that description is truly remarkable. From that, however, I deduced she is 5'5" weighs 117 whent to a state college and works in marketing but wants to write decetive stories. Other than that I will wait upon what Debj is looking for in a bar. |
obxgirl,
FIrst, the OP asked for NYC bars FOR LOCALS. And, as I said, any NYC bar for a LOCAL crowd probably wouldn't really welcome being advertised on a Travel Forum, would they? I'm sure you are intelligent enough to realize that most, if not all, cities and towns with high tourist traffic have places that local people like to keep to themselves, just for a bit of breathing room. This is true in Venice, Italy, and it's true in NYC, as well as many other places in the world. Nothing to do with being friendly to travelers or not. In fact, I responded to that same OP on another thread about a bar that WAS popular with locals and is now more crowded with tourists. So some of us moved on elsewhere-not wanting to be on display. As far as I can see, the only really unfriendly replies here seem to be yours-which apparently are directed against the 2 New Yorkers on this thread.. Interesting that you find it acceptable to call the both of us "ugly" in our realistic responses, yet neither one of us (and I don't always agree with Aduchamp either) were unpleasant to the OP at all. I agree with Aduchamp-if the OP returns with some request for a bar other than that it be "For Locals"- she might get more response. Or maybe she'll go to Mars looking for that old hit man. If I were sitting at my local pub right now with some friends- I highly doubt we'd want to share barspace with someone who thinks that way about the locals. |
If you are looking for friendly, I'd avoid any bar recommended in this thread given the snark and nastiness.
|
I can't answer your question but can tell you murphguide.com and nymag.com both have good search engines for bars and you can search by location, feature etc. Also, there is no NYC term like "lower west side" despite there being a lower east side. The lower west side is either Chelsea, meatpacking district, Tribeca or the financial district depending on how far south you mean.
I'll also add if you're looking for bars near a particular hotel or other location, you can map it on maps.google.com and use the "search nearby" function for bars-many of which will come with reviews. |
After going to the Corner Bistro for a burger, I would say (sans snark or nastiness) that it is frequented by locals.
|
I'll give you the same advice that I give for restaurant shopping - read menus and look inside -- if the place feels like a place where you want to stay -- do so -- otherwise, this the host person that you are checking your options and you might be back -- explore -- you'll find a place that you feel is local

Nope. Just a rube with a keyboard. Very clear that you don't want to share your local spots. My point to you, bellastarr, is that rather than just passing on the post you went out of your way to tell debj that you weren't answering her question b/c if she was there it wouldn't be a local place. Audchamp, b/c of my limited intellect, I missed the self deprecating part of your OP as well as the old hit man reference. Sorry to hijack your thread debj. |

If you pick up a copy of Time Out NY or go their website they are always are writing about the Manattana and Brooklyn bar scene. If you are twenty soemthing I would recommend Beauty Bar on East 14th Street. |
Alternatively, check out Citysearch, which you can search by neighborhood and read the user reviews.
http://newyork.citysearch.com/profil...wn_tavern.html I might also add that, since it is Gay Pride Week (yesterday being the 40th Anniversary of Stonewall- Adchamp's query regarding the possibility of looking for a gay local bar is not at all unwarranted, since Greenwich Village will be bustling with Gay men and Lesbians celebrating. |
See, was that so hard?
|
MikeT- your post was nasty enough and it wouldn't be so hard to follow our examples and take it all back, now would it, hmmm?
|
I used to go to Paris Commune way back in the day when it was called Nadine's. It's a neighborhood place so I think it would qualify as "frequented by locals". Have fun.
