NYC any place to check luggage for the day in Manhattan?

Post 9/11, do you know of any place I can check luggage for the day in Manhattan? I won't be checking into a hotel. I'll be flying into LaGuardia and cabbing into Manhattan late morning or mid-day. My friend won't arrive with a car till late afternoon or early evening. I need a place to park my bags until I can load them into the car for a trip to Jersey. Any ideas?

Penn Station or Port Authority

For $1200 you can store your bags with my doorman. Okay, just joking.

Other than a hotel, I'm not aware of anyplace.

Penn Station has a checked luggage counter. It used to be pretty cheap but the prices went up about a year ago... I think Grand Central has the same.

Penn's is located in the SW corner on the Amtrak level, near the entrance for gates 4W and 5W. Grand Central's is down on the dining concourse somewhere.

It is my understanding that you have to have an Amtrak ticket to be able to use Amtrak's baggage storage facility at Penn Station. What you can do is buy an Amtrak ticket to Newark New Jersey (the next closest stop) and then you should be able to store your bags, which costs $4.50 per bag. The bad news is that the ticket is like $30 for the cheapest non-reserved train. So overall this might be a little pricey, but it beats lugging the bags around.

There have been various threads in the past that hotels in the neighborhood of Penn Station or Grand Central might take the bags for like $8 a bag, but after 9/11 I don't know if they still do this. I have also heard rumors that the NY Hilton at 6th Ave between West 53rd and 54th will do this for a fee as they have a luggage scanner, but I have no actual personal knowledge of this. You might call the Hilton and ask.

I don't think there is a baggage storage facility in Grand Central any more, and this seems to be confirmed by the MTA website, see http://mta-nyc.custhelp.com/cgi-bin/...ZQ**&p_li=

However, it might be worth contacting the MTA (who operate the station I believe) to enquire, go to http://mta-nyc.custhelp.com/cgi-bin/...nduser/ask.php for a link.

There is no baggage at the Port Authority bus terminal as they make clear on the first page of their website, see http://www.panynj.gov/tbt/pabmain.HTM

I don't remember my friend having to show a ticket at the baggage counter, but I could be wrong. The Amtrak website doesn't say...

Go to the Marriott Marquis in Times Square and check your bags with the bellman. Tip $1-$2 per bag.

The storage room at GCT is closed. I have gone over to the Grand Hyatt and have given my luggage to the porter to store in their locked facility. They have always been accommodating and I have never been asked if I am a guest of the hotel. If you choose to leave your luggage at a hotel please remember to tip for the privilege.

contact Rick's Limousine/(Lincoln Towncar) based in Newtown CT for a trip from LaGuardia to Manhatten, and info on the bags. Most reliable airport transportation around. 203-426-9017

Thanks so much, everyone, for the info. They sure don't make this easy, do they? I guess going to the Marriott M. or the Hyatt and just checking the bag/s without any fuss or explanation is the way to go. With appropriate tipping, of course.
