Hello people,
I am off to NYC 9Feb-13Feb and was wondering if you could give me an idea of how cold etc and what clothing is required to be comfortable getting around.

February is traditionally the coldest month of the year in New York. How cold? The wind chill could get to single digits! How to dress comfortably? I don't mean to sound sarcastic, but the obvious answer is: Wear very warm clothes.

Layer.

Make sure your shoes have rubber soles.

Must haves: wool coat or parka, scarf, gloves, and hat.

Howard is correct - but a little optimistic. You can get windchills of -20 at night. And with the wind tunnel effect of the large buildings - it can be incredibly cold. However, it is also possible that it could be quite pleasnat during the day - as much as 40 or so - and only 30 at night.

Either way you will need a winter coat, gloves,hat and scarf. Also reco some waterproof footwear. To know how many other things you need - extra sweaters, trutrlenecks etc - check the weather right before you leave. No one can really tell more than a couple of days in advance - as you well know.

It's been pretty cold here the past few weeks in the low-mid 20's Farenheit.

It's best to check weather.com as you get closer to your departure date and get a forecast. It could be anywhere from 0-40F.

Layers are the way to go.

You also want waterproof boots or shoes because we have a foot of snow that will become slush and COLD water. You haven't lived until you've had a foot full of ice cold water in your shoe.

Definitely layers! As others have already said it can be incredibly cold, but also it can be WAY too warm in the stores, etc. If you are dressed in layers you can take off a coat, sweater, etc and be comfortable.

I just have to agree: Layers and cover any exposed skin, including your hands (mittens are warmer than gloves), neck (scarf and/or turtleneck) and head -- a hat is a must.

You didn't mention where you're coming from, but I have noticed that visitors from warm places often need more layers than locals, need gloves when locals don't, etc.

This is a dilemma in NY. You'll be freezing outside (the wind off those tall buildings makes like a 40 below wind chill ;) ) but then you'll nbe miserable in Macy's!!!

Just back from NY. Do take a good pair of boots. If there is any snow on the ground it is a total mess on the NY sidewalks. Boots are essential to keep your feet warm -- but mostly dry. The slush was dreadful and boots were a must.

Pop a pair of earmuffs in your pocket. They won't mess your hair, but are great when you hit one of those streets much like a wind tunnel.

A faux (or real) Pashmina style scarf is worn by all. Looks good with your coat, pulls up around your nose in the wind and is snuggly in the cold theaters or restaurants when you check your coat.

I took a longish black wool skirt to wear with sweaters and boots. Worked well because I could layer it with tights and warm socks inside the boots.

Ooops! Just noticed you posted as "Boy" from oz. Sorry about the skirt comment, but the boots are still a must.

today is one of our coldest days 18 degrees.We vay from 10-32 in the winter,so dress warm

Today it was almost 50 and we might hit a record tomorrow.
