The crowds will be ridiculous wherever the fireworks are. In recent years, the fireworks have moved back to the East River, so you'll want to avoid the Brooklyn Bridge area in the afternoon, but otherwise, most of the other areas where people gather are not that close to major tourist sites (one of the reasons the fireworks are on that side of Manhattan). However, if they move back to the west side, Times Square will be an absolute zoo. You won't know that until May or June, so just plan your trip. The city is otherwise not any busier than normal then, but the weather can be miserably hot and humid.
