You cant beat a trip to the borough of Brooklyn. You can see neigborhoods from every corner of the universe. Visit Coney Island, stroll on the bordwalk or take a swim. Eat a Nathans hot dog and visit the world famous Cyclone. Oops you are pregnant but you can look at others having fun on the wooden oceanfront roller coaster. Visit the Brooklyn Museum, Brooklyn Botanical Gardens and stroll along Sheepshead Bay, view the Manhattan skyline from the Brooklyn Promenade, see Little Odessa with the multitude of Russian restaurants and Russian signs. You can spend the entire day and yet there is more to see. There are close to 3 million people living in Brooklyn, the 4th largest city in the USA. ENJOY!!

I know that this may sound extravagent, but how about shopping for neat things for the baby.
Tiffany's and Fortunoff's have some beautiful silver items, like silver spoons, silver engravable cups, silver brush and comb sets, silver baby rattles, and silver frames.
Also, check out the baby clothes at Bloomingdales or even Saks Fifth Avenue.
Saks Fifth Avenue is right next to St. Patrick's Cathedral, a gorgeous example of Neo-gothic architecture and it will probably be cool inside. Also, across the street is Rockefeller Center, which is still lovely in the summer.
No one on this post has mentioned the Met Museum of Art. I know that it is a BIG museum, but it is still worth a look. There are plenty of benches and cafe`s throughout the museum, and it will be cool inside.

Have a great time - you've gotten excellent suggestions. I also love Takashimaya - it's a wonderful respite to have tea there, perhaps after a visit to MoMA, which is nearby.
I'm also a fan of the Staten Island ferry. It's super cheap and a wonderful way to see the harbor, including the statue of liberty.
By the way, despite what you might think, NYC tap water is fine to drink and actually pretty tasty. So if you have a water bottle, you can fill up at the hotel or at water fountains on your travels.

jfinch,
Time Square will not just be hot but I really don't think the air quality will be good for an 8-month pregnant woman. I'm not an NYC basher, actually a fiercely proud Manhattanite but I just want to manage your expectation. New Yorkers tend to avoid time Square like the plague especially in the summer, it can be quite unbearable. I wouldn't normally recommend the loop tour bus but for your condition and in the middle of the summer it could be a good way to see the city. Also you can take the Staten Island or Ellis Island ferries to see the Statue of Liberty. Go to Central Park, there are many shaded areas. The Met, MoMa, Whitney, and Guggenheim are musts. Also consider going for afternoon tea at the Pierre, the Ritz or the St. Regis, etc it's one of the most quinessential Manhattan experiences.
Yes, tap water here is great so drink up. Also if you have a hand fan, bring it. Otherwise you can find one anywhere here in souvenir stores and Chinatown.

I live in NYC and am 7 months pregnant. I would advise you to stay away from subways and take cabs if you can afford it, especially at night. No one gets up for you and gives you a seat, and many stations can be ten times hotter underground than they are outside. The wait at night for a train can take quite a while, and I've almost fainted a few times.
Otherwise, take it very slow, stop at every bodega (deli/convienience store) and get yourself a liter of water. PRemature labor can be brought on by dehydration. I've been known to down 6 or more litres of water in a day.
Have fun!

PLEASE TAKE CABS AND NOT THE SUBWAY - at least in this heat wave.
A 7 month pregnant woman died at Fenway Park. She apparantly had an underlying heart condition, but heat exhaustion can come suddenly.

Stay as cool as possible. Now is not the time for you to be using the subways in NY.
