NYC - 110th Street
 

Is it bad form to belt out Bobby Womack's seminal 1972 classic ' Across 110th Street', whilst crossing 110th Street, if:-

1. I can't sing
2. I'm not the third brother of five.

It is better than humming "Feelin' Groovy" as you pass over the 59th Street Bridge.

I stood on the corner taking it easy in Winslow, Arizona, so I say, Go for it!

How about standing at 57th and Seventh and asking, "How do I get to Carnegie Hall?"

It's NY - you can sing anything you want anywhere - but do expect ad hoc critiques.

Please give my regards to Broadway.

I grew up on 110th Street, and have some issues with the song. But,most of the people living there now are younger than it is. They are far more likely to be tolerant of "ancient history."

I would rather hear you sing "On Broadway" when crossing that street.

And RFK Bridge The Triboro

On the other hand I do call the airport JFK not Idlewild.

And for all visitors, Houston Street is pronounced HOW-stin and predates Sam Houston by a least 100 years.

I didn't know until just now that it has a name other than the Triboro.

I think it depends on if you are walking north or south on 110th, that's either toward or away from the park. If walking toward the park, the trees will love the music and the trees here need all the help they can get. You know why we keep all those trees together in Central Park? Well it's New York, they could get hurt so we keep them all together.

They just changed the name of the Triboro in the last two years.

No, I had no idea. At least they name them after famous people. Here in the Bay Area, every freeway seems to be named after someone I've never heard of.

If you looked closely you have seen a tiny sign that indicated that the name has been changed.

And they changed the name of the Interboro to the Jackie Robinson.

For example, from that bastion of all truth, Wikipedia:

"The segment of Interstate 280 north of SR 1 in San Francisco was originally named the Southern Freeway, but has since recently been officially renamed the John F. Foran Freeway after John Foran, a former California State Senator and Assembly member and current partner at law firm Nossaman LLP; <u>however, most people still refer to this section of the freeway by its original name, the Southern Freeway</u>.

And <u>The section of I-280 between the James Lick Freeway and its end at 6th St. and King Street is called the Southern Embarcadero Freeway</u>

FWIW, perhaps I am particularly unobservant, but I have lived in the Bay Area for 38 years. Until today I have never heard of John Foran, and noone I know has ever referred to any part of 280 as anything other than "280". And I take the "section of I-280 between the James Lick Freeway and its end at 6th St. and King Street" twice a day :-)

Rudy was responsible for renaming the WS H'way after Joe Di. He's a big Yankee fan.

But like the Triboro, most people still call it by its original name.

In fact I sing, "Where have you gone West Side Highway?"
