NYC - 10 days of unique shops/ stores/ snacks - share your favorites please
Thanks so much to everyone who shared their favorite museums.
I'm headed up soon for 10 days in Manhattan. I'll be doing a little bit of working (my work), a whole lot of dogwalking (my NYC "job") and spending time in blocks of a few hours trying to see and experience things I've not seen before.
On my last trip, a friend asked me to buy her a tin of the amazing chocolate at MarieBelle -
http://www.mariebelle.com/
I discovered a wonderful shop I'd never heard of, met up with a delightful Fodorite there and we wandered a bit in the area (her neck of the woods) and had a great dinner.
That experience reminded me a bit of finding my first Laduree shop in Paris. One day I'm going to scan those pics because one of my favorite pics is out front. The delight in both actually BEING at Laduree and tasting one of the famous macaroons showed on my face. One of my favorite Paris memories

My longtime favorite shop to stop in and find a little something is Fishs Eddy. Not on everyone's radar, but purchases here are some of my favorite souvenirs -
http://www.fishseddy.com/browse.cfm/2,211.html
How delightful to be in the city with one of my friends who invited me to join him and his little girl for her first ever experience at the American Girl store -
http://www.americangirl.com/stores/location_ny.php
I've loved the Foods of NY tours and think I'm going to go on the Chinatown tour this time -
https://www.zerve.com/amp/view_activ...tivity_id=1357
And based on random googling and searches, I think I'm going to try the inexpensive (clothed) massages at this Chinatown location -
http://www.yelp.com/biz/wu-lim-qi-go...-new-york-city
I stil haven't been here - http://www.dylanscandybar.com/gifts/
and have never actually made it to Serendipity...yet.
But, I was happy that we didn't have to wait in line for a cupcake at Magnolia Bakery - while on the Sex and the City tour
So, those are the kinds of things I'm looking for. A unique shop or experience, a great tea or chocolate shop, a store you won't find everywhere else (like Fishs Eddy) or anything unique or "traditional" for NYC.
Suggestions welcomed. Those are starting points.
During this trip I'll be with someone 1/3 of the time, solo 1/3 of the time and meeting up with friends 1/3 of the time. My base will be the UWS, but I'll probably venture out to a new neighborhood each day.
Looking for at least 10 new ideas - one for each day! Many thanks,

A few Lower East Side possibilities:
-Kossar's Bialys. (likely the only place that sells bialys retail anymore)
-Russ and Daughters. (smoked fish in many varieties, and will make you a smoked fish sandwich on a bagel to go)
-Il Laboratorio del Gelato (ice cream storefront)
-Kossar's Bialys. (likely the only place that sells bialys retail anymore)

Restaurants we liked: Natsumi, a Japanese-Italian fusion place on W. 50th, VYNL, a great little coffee shop on 9th Avenue, and the Gray Dog Cafe near Union Square.
I like shopping in museum gift shops, and some of the Broadway-oriented shops in the theater district.

On the Upper West Side for breakfast try Good Enough to Eat which is on Amsterdam between 83rd and 84th. It wouldn't be a bad place to go alone, there is a bar you could eat at as well as small tables. It's less crowded on weekdays.

Thanks so much for the great ideas. I met up with ellenem this afternoon and we were able to see the following...
- Russ and Daughters - loved looking around. Only bought two dried apricots dipped in chocolate (and we ate them on the spot)
- Essex Market
- saw Kossner's and the Pickle Guys (closed)
- stood in line at the Donut Plant (tres leches and chocolate cake donuts to go)
(peeked into Katz' deli and took some pics)
Yesterday I hit the sale gift shop at the Met and found some good buys. I can believe how fast this week has gone by - and look forward using this list again on my next visit.
- Economy candy

Okay, I'm headed back this spring. Checking off some things we did last time and looking at ideas for this trip.
HowardR, the High Line is at the top of my list with a stop at Chelsea Market.
I'm hoping Kossar's Bialys and the pickle guys will be open. My friend wants to do a Tenement tour and I've enjoyed every one I've been on.
I want to get to the Cloisters this trip.

Please note Kossar's and the Pickle Guys are closed on Friday afternoons and Saturdays. Also be sure to try the Pickle Guys new creation, pickled pineapple, absolutely addictive.
The Essex Market is the wonderful combiantion of neighborhood Latino provision stands and hipster chocolates and cheeses counters. It is worth a walk through.
Also Il Laboratorio de Gelato has opened a huge store on the corner of Houston and Ludlow.
