NYC 10/28 -- What's up?
 

Getting a hotel for 10/28 is quite difficult. Some hotels are sold out.

What's going on that night?

It's autumn in New York and Halloween weekend. I did a quick Expedia search and came up with lots of possibilities at typical NYC prices.

I guess I am used to getting good deals on Priceline ($111 for Paramount, etc.)There are no deals to be had on Priceline for that night.

Those days are long gone. Fall is a busy time of the year in NYC and everything is pretty expensive up there.

It is the Poland Spring 5 miler that kicks off the ING New York City Marathon.

Thousands of people from other countries come for the entire week and not just marathon weekend.

I tried for a room also because I want to run the 5 miler and the cheapest I found for Saturday night is $269 on Hotwire.

I love when people say "what's going on in NY that night/week/month"?

It's NY, and especially in the last quarter of the year, hotels do sell out. Remember too that the hotel room inventory has shrunk due to the large number of hotels/rooms that have gone condo.

You need to plan early for NY in the fall.

Sue and others are absolutely correct! Few to no "deals" to be had until second week of January.

What's going on that night? Everything (but nothing unusual).

In the Fall, everyone wants to visit the Greatest City in the World!

I found that there are a lot of rooms available but they sure aren't on par with the nice Priceline bargains of years past! Not sure where you want to be, or how long you want to stay, or how much you are willing to spend but here is what I found from budget to a more comfortable room for one night 10/28. For no-frills budget properties there is the Murray Hill Inn $169 (lodging.com), Hotel 31 $136 (hotels.com), Deauville for $130 (lodging.com) and the Wolcott for $204 (orbitz.com) If you want to spend more the Club Quarters Downtown is $224, the W is $226, Jolly Hotel Madison Towers is $232 (Worldres.com) and the Beekman at $244 (Hotels.com).

At any other time of the year (except from now until January 2) I would say that these are all over priced for what you get, but this is a very expensive time to visit NYC. What ever hotel you choose be sure to compare prices as they can vary webite to website (and don't forget to compare with the hotel's own site) Good luck!

Should have added that there are fancier, more expensive properties available, but I tried to pick ones that were on the lower price end incase you were on a budget. If you can/want to spend more there are more available

For the first couple of years after 9/11 tourism in NYC was down and hotel rates artificially low. We have now recovered from that and rates are getting higher - as prices for everything always does.

Also, rates are higher - and rooms scarcer since

the poor value of the dollar means more American tourists in NYC - vs europe

the same poor value means a LOT more european travlers in NYC

Several major hotels have been shut to be turned into condos - which are much more profitable

So - expect rates to continue to rise and rooms to continue to be scarce - esp from Oct through New Years

And yes - there is SOMETHING (usually more than 1 something) happening in New York every week. That's why all those people want to be here.

I just booked a room at the Radio City Apartments for $186.00 for a family of 4. It was for this coming Saturday night (10/21). It is a studio with 2 dbl. beds and a small kitchen. Located at 142 W. 49th Street. (877) 921 9321. I checked some of the other budget hotels and they had really bad reviews but this one seemed to be a popular hotel. You may want to try there.

Sparks_fly, you were lucky that there was a room at RCA, it is a good budget property and books well in advance. Fabulous location, if it's warm this weekend you can grab something to eat and sit at the table and chairs at the little park (with a waterfall) practically next door to the hotel or the park across the street. Enjoy!

I was able to get the Hilton Millenium for $203 on Priceline. Thanks for all the good info. Particular thanx to Margo_Chester who provided me with some websites I was not aware of and will keep in mind for future adventures.
