I stayed there several years ago. It was ok. The clientele that I saw was mostly destitute individuals who obtained housing within the Y building.
There is a YMCA on East 47th st. that is MUCH better-rooms and the gym!!
There is a cafe in the 47th st Y; I don't recall the 63rd st having one. Also, the clientele tends to be young tourists. The price at both places was the same.
Other than that expect plain, but clean facilities.

The Y at West 63rd was renovated a few years ago, and as a result they raised the price. It now caters more to students and European visitors looking for bargain basement prices. The rooms are extremely basic and I think run between $75-100. The location is excellent for Manhattan being steps from Central Park.

For the price, you can do much better for a hotel on Priceline. Check www.biddingfortravel.com before you bid to give you an idea of the prices.
I have gotten great accomodations for $80-100 a night in NY on Priceline.
