NY to Sturbridge, MA - destination ideas
 

Hi. My husband and myself are driving down to a wedding in Sturbridge MA for Saturday evening coming from NYC area. On our way back Sunday we'd like to get a great idea for something to do that is fun or a must do adventure while we are out there.

Could be a great restaurant for lunch, short nature walk through scenic country or historic farm land... Just something that is very interesting, fun or a must do stop.
Anywhere from Sturbridge MA or any point returning back through CT would be OK.
Taking I84 from MA down through CT and could hook on down towards the bay by New Haven if there is something good that we can do.

Sturbridge Village would be a fun day if you have not toured it before. There are several restaurants on site that are quite good and the village is a wonderful history lesson. Beautiful scenery and well done village docents make it a wonderful day.

Old Sturbridge Village would be an obvious choice, as described by travelbuff, if you haven't been.

Otherwise, how about Hartford? I've very much enjoyed my visit to the Mark Twain House, Harriet Beecher Stowe House, as well as the Wadsworth Atheneum.

I will definitely look into the Sturbridge Village. I saw it listed on the destinations sites but I wanted to get some opinions & ideas from forum members first.

I love Sturbridge Village and have been several times starting when I was a kid. The village has some of the oldest buildings in New England, and has a working farm, grainery, mill, leather works, bakery all dating from the 1800's. It is really a fun day if you are at all a history buff.

The docents all dressed in period costume really make it pardon the pun please, come alive.

There are a couple of restaurants and a really nice gift shop.

If you have ever been out to Old Bethe Page on Long Island, Sturbridge is quite a bit bigger, but on similar.

Another huzzah for Old Sturbridge Village, just to relax and stroll around. We'll stop off there (again) in a couple of days heading for Berkshires.
Depending on desired route there is the Hudson Valley with much to see.

The "quiet corner" of CT is beautiful (the far NE corner, just south and a little east from Sturbridge)-beautiful mansions, scenic roads, boarding schools, etc. I also love the Litchfield Hills area-drive (or bike) around Lake Waramaug-there is a restaurant called the Hopkins Inn that's great to sit outside and overlook the lake, food is so so but great views, or Olivia is nearby in Preston, I think. Fun area to just meander and get lost in. The Audobon Center in Sharon is great too.
