NY thruway fishing stop
My family of four are driving from Rochester, VT to Niagara Falls in August. We aren't from the area, we are going up to Vermont for a wedding, then hitting Niagara for a few days on the way home. I am looking for a spot somewhere on the thruway (or a little ways off of it, just not crazy far) to stop and stay and possibly do a little evening or morning fishing before finishing the trip to the falls.

Hmmm.. Just an idea. Most of the way the Thruway parallels the Erie Canal/Mohawk river. When I ride my bike along the canal I frequently see people who fish right below the locks on the canal. No idea what they catch, if anything but it'd be close to the NYS Thruway.

if you are looking for trout there are too many to list...my husband used to fish in the Erie area and the Cataraugus Creek...look under www.fisherie.com/stream-descriptions#16 for listings of the streams close to Erie and directions....also you can google Cataraugus Creek for info on that too...maybe too hot in the summer to fish...fish get into distress when it is hot.....my husband has passed on a few years ago or I would ask him for advise...

Don't forget the appropriate fishing license wherever you decide--and a trout stamp if needed.

I hope that you're thinking catch and release... A fish in a car for a couple of days might begin to smell like visitors who have overstayed their welcome.

As you cross New York State, you will be driving along the top of the Finger Lakes... pick a lake, any lake, or wait til you reach Niagara... some of the best fishing in the upper Niagara River near Youngstown NY and Lewiston... have fun...

Check out the Canandaigua Marine Park at the north end of Canandaigua Lake in the town of Canandaigua. If you want to go out on a boat, the Sweet Melissa is a good one.
