Just as a follow-up, travelzoo now has some greaqt deals posted for Jan and Feb in NYC. I just booked a king room for a weekend in late Jan. at the Wyndham Hotel Times Square South (it is close to Penn Station actually, very nice hotel, good reviews) for $109 a night base rate, $128 with taxes. By far the best NYC hotel deal I have gotten (except when I use points and get a free room of course).

Follow-up: We stayed at the LaQuinta, and it was really pretty much perfect for what we wanted. It's in the exciting Korea Town district, and super-close to Macy's. Take a right out the hotel, and there's a subway station only two or three blocks over. Take a left, and wander around lost for awhile (LOL!) and you'll find Penn Station before too long. There were boring restaurants for picky eaters (Burger King and Starbucks), and more exciting places like a Korean chicken take-out. Also, two drugstores that were very handy for last-minute gifts and for blister remedies. And so reasonable!
I did have some trouble with the safe (you have to wait until it beeps open -- don't try and open it right away after punching in your code). And it wasn't gleaming/shining like a higher-priced hotel.
I'd definitely stay there again.

Thanks for the followup. I'm glad you liked the LaQuinta. I've enjoyed staying there too. It's a good choice if you want a moderate hotel that's not fancy but clean with nice amenities. I like the location, especially the convenience to the subway. Funny story - I was up there for a visit when I arranged to meet a family member up there for a summer internship. Her apartment was literally around the corner. In all of NYC we were feet from one another ;-)
