We will be in NYC on 12-1 and leave sunday 12-4. We would like to visit the Brooklyn Wall Memorial which i understand is near coney island. We plan on going to Peter Lugars to dine at some point and wander if the Subway will work from the Hotel and if so which ones and estimated times would be helpful.

There are four subway lines, D, F, N, Q that stop at the Still Avenue terminus just a few blocks from the Brooklyn Wall. It will take at least one hour. There is always work on the subway lines, so you should check before choosing a line. I would imagine the hotel can check on-line for you.

To get to Peter Luger's:

Take the 6 train to Broadway-Lafayette and transfer to F Train downtown to Delancey Street. Go upstairs and transfer to the J, M, Z Train over the Williamsburg Bridge to Marcy Avenue (First stop over the bridge). Walk on Broadway towards the East River to Peter Luger at 178 Broadway.

On the way back take the J or Z to Chambers Street and transfer to the 4,5,6 at Brooklyn Bridge. There is no uptown transfer at Broadway Lafayette.

Remember Luger's only takes cash, so bring lots of it.

For directions from any 2 points, use maps.google.com and after getting a driving map, click the train icon at the top for subway directions. Since trains often get rerouted on weekends, make sure to pick the correct date/time.

To be honest, I'd take a taxi to Peter Luger from your hotel. It shouldn't cost much more than $20. You can easily get a car service or taxi back; cars are either there or can be called. I wouldn't bother with the subway. The area, while safe enough, is pretty desolate and uninviting, and the subway requires too many connections, which are not easy later at night.

I'll offer a little food advice if you go to Peter Luger's, adapted from an earlier thread here.

If you go to Peter Luger's, apparently the way to go is to order the porterhouse for two people or more. Reports suggest you get a tomato and onion salad and put the steak sauce on that, not the steak -- it's a sturdy sauce with noticeable amounts of horseradish. They apparently do a mean side order of bacon, as well as an excellent burger, good fries, and decent German potatoes. Side orders are large, feeding several people per order.

Rolls are good, too, and those at least I can vouch for.

I went by myself and unfortunately was stuck getting the "steak for one," what was probably a strip steak which had nice flavor but a load of gristle. Their salad was nice enough, consisting of field greens, but the dressing might as well not have been there -- and that's where the the steak sauce was put to good use, as a salad dressing. Will order something different there if I return.

And yes, they take only cash or their own in-house credit card. Nothing else.

I would book Luger's asap. I also recommend the lamb chops. And the spinach. Agree about getting the steak for two. I thought the burger was only for lunch, but maybe not..
