NY Guidebook Recommendations

I know we are on the Fodor's forum.. but any other recommendations beside the Fodor's book for a week's visit to NY? Maps?
Thanks!

My top two would be Eyewitness Top 10 and the Access Guide.

Ditto Eyewitness Top 10. Practical and useful.

Another vote for the Eyewitness Top Ten. I used that one and the Eyewitness regular NYC one.

Love the Eywitness guides, and I also recommend "Streetwise Manhattan" for a good complete map that is not the size of the NYTimes when you unfold it!

Thanks for all the guidebook ideas. I hadn't considered the Eyewitness series. We all ready have a place to stay, so will be needing info on sights and on restaurants. Any good book focusing on food? I know there is Zagats but I'm not wild about their guidebooks. Thanks!

For food, just go to menupages.com

Note that menus are not necessarily up to date, but will give you the idea.

Great for links to restaurant's website if there is one.

Link to HopStop as well.

I'm surprised at the popularity of the Eyewitness guides. I find them to have too much information and to be too heavy to lug around.

I find Frommer's guide books to be helpful for restaurants because descriptions are complete enough to give insight into the kind of experiences restaurants provide.

My reply posted before I had time to add that one big source of fun for us when we visit NYC (or any other city) is to dine in restaurnts and serendipitously catch our fancy.

Actually, the Fodor's guidebook is very well done. I use Fodor's and the StreetSmart map (which folds and is laminated, and great to carry around).

For carrying around during the day, I'm partial to the "New York Map Guide", a thin, detailed map "book" (64 pp.) that fits easily in the pocket and also has a subway map and some basic guidebook-type information. It's part of Penguin's "Mapguide" series.

If you are a Pocket PC user, there is a travel guide that you can download and use instead of using a book.
Here is where I got it:

I have used one on my recent trip to New York and it was very convenient, informative & easy to navigate. It has great maps and restaurant recommendations!
I think, it's also available for other platforms, like Smartphone & Blackberry.
