NY - Gospel Brunch

Hi,

Will be in NY next week and would like to go to hear some Gospel music on Sunday. Have seen the brunch at BB Kings, but don't like the Southern food. Is there anywhere else that we can go?

Thanks, Laura

Hi there

You can go see the real thing in Harlem:

Enjoy!

Most places with gospel will serve southern food I think. You can check Sylvia's in Harlem but it's southern food and Lola in Soho may have started their gospel brunch but the website doesn't indicate it.

The very best & authentic Gospel music will be only in Harlem. If you don't like soul food, there's also other ethnic restaurants there or simply take the subway (or bus) into Manhattan, short ride, long walk and all kind of restaurants are there. For the Gospel session, dress nice and an elaberate hat for the ladies is appropiate.

Forgot to mention, a variety of Churches avalable there, just walk past and when you hear the music, enter. No need to plan - you'll find them righ off 125th st.

"The very best & authentic Gospel music will be only in Harlem"

This is absolutely positively NOT true. The gospel choir at BB King's is the Harlem gospel choir http://www.bbkingblues.com/schedule/...fo.cgi?id=2642 and there's plenty of authentic gospel in Brooklyn at the Brooklyn Tabernacle Church.

mcclurie: your absolutely right throughout the boroughs, and beyond, however, when a post refers to N.Y., I'm preety sure they mean the Manhatten area.

mclaurie Oct 14th, 2007 10:22 AM

virgi, are you saying the Harlem Gospel choir (who perform at BB King's in midtown) are not authentic?

virgi Oct 14th, 2007 11:18 AM

Mccluire: I guess I'm too clear in my post please excuse,I'm trying to say BB or ANY of the Gospel groups would be a rewarding experience. I'm saying if an out of towner is going to N.Y. they are generally referring to the Manhatten area, and Harlem is right there, so make it easy on the innocent that is not familiar with different sections. I've seen fabulous Gospel around Simpson St. in the Bronx. My point, which I failed to make is go to Harlem, Lauradublin already mention research for BB Kings, so I thought just to direct her to another type restaurant, other than soul, would make it easier on the unfamiliar boroughs - let them stay around Harlem, get it?

Hi all,

Thanks for all the suggestions. I think Virgi is right. We would prefer to stay in Manhattan.

Lauradublin, I don't know what virgi is trying to say, but what mclaurie is saying is that the Harlem Gospel Choir sings at BB King's and BB King's is IN midtown Manhattan. I hope that's clear.

Thanks, dmlove. I had decided to give up. #-O

A gospel brunch will serve soul food/southern food.

What about it don't you like? I'm curious.

Lauradublin Oct 15th, 2007 08:42 AM

Hi,

I have spent some time in some southern states and their food is just so different to ours. For us, there is a lot more fat or grease than we would be used to. We have nothing against it, and may end up going, but it just wouldn't be my first choice.

Thanks for all the advice, Laura
