NY Fire Dept????
Can anyone tell me about the fire hall that was just up the street from the WTC. I believe this was the first respondants. We would like to go there and pay our respects to the firemen who lost there lives that horrible day but unfortunately having a hard time finding the right one.
THank you Kim |

You can pay your respects at any firehouse in NYC. Firefighters from all Manhattan stations reported first, then those from the outer boroughs (as suburban fire companies moved in to take their places). By the end there were firefighters and police from 3 states there (NY, NJ and CT) many of whom were off duty and simply got in their personal cars and drove in.
We live right in from Columbus Ave - which is the main southbound route on the West side and there were fire trucks screaming down the avenue for what seemed like hours - including some from Yonkers and other places in Westchester as the companies from further north and west moved in to take over their stations. (At this point it was thought that there might be a lot of injured survivors - so all emergency staff were converging on the spot - some from NJ even coming over on ferries (which were later used to evacuate those caught in the debris fall). I knew 2 firefighters that died - one the fiance of a woman I worked with and the other an in-law of my sister in law. Neither was from Manhattan. I worked near the UN and when they reopened our offices days afterward there was a huge amount of security, and I have very clear memories of traffic cops from CT and NJ standing at every corner helping get the traffic mess sorted out. |
Sorry - the really sad part is not just those who died at the time - but all the responders who have become and still are becoming ill because of all the toxins in the air.
Never mind the psychological devastation to all those families. |
