Let me Apologise firstly as I know this has been discussed on many times, but my challenge is keeping x 2 boys 10yrs and 7yrs happy as well. I want them to enjoy it as well and would appreciate any help in suggestions of a Itinerary for a 4 day vacation. Any suggestions would really be appreciated.

There are so many great things for kids to do in NYC! When are you visiting?

You can take them to the Natural History Museum or the Metropolitan Museum, take a ride on the 'beast' boat, visit the Statue of Liberty, explore the Intrepid, see a show (Blue Man Group is a favorite of mine), take them to the Bronx Zoo or the little neighborhood zoo in Central Park, go to the Top of the Rock or Empire State Building for great views. Visit Times Square and go to the huge Toys R Us there and the M&M candy shop. There's a great leggo place in Rockefeller Plaza. You can walk over the Brooklyn Bridge and don't forget to take a subway, cab, and bus ride while you're here. For many visitors, using mass transit is novel. Try to visit several neighborhoods so you get a feel for the diversity and various atmospheres of New York City.

Seven and ten years old are great ages for travel! Old enough to hang in there but still young enough not to act like an opinionated 'tween! Have fun!

Since the visit is in Dec, the Beast will not be an option. Would highly recommend the visit to the Intrepid and the Natural History Museum. I also recommend the TOTR. A lot of it will be weather-dependent. That will be very early for cold / snow but its definitely possible.

To stores to visit are:

Forbidden Planet which has all sorts of science fiction and fantasy books and things

Evolution-a store with skulls and all sorts of odd things kids love.

Good food for adults and fun for kids:

Lombardi's pizza-excellent pizza and they will often let the kids see the oven.

Katz's Deli-Great, great pastrami, old fashioned atmosphere. Let the kids put in a dollar into the tip jar of the meat slicer for a bigger sanswich. Sandwiches are expensive but can easily be shared.

Best NY sights for kids that age:

Museum of Nat'l History
Intrepid Air/Spce Museum
Top of the rock
Staten Island Ferry (view of SoL, which wil be closed by then)
Central Park with smal zoo (the big onei n the Bronx is great but takes a full day
Met Mueum (esp Egyptian dep't. Temple of Dendur and Arms & Armor)
Show - perhaps Blue Man Group

Also it would help to know if they have special interests

Go to the website of the local new channel - NY1.com- the week before you arrive. They always have info on special events for kids - perhaps a circus or magic show or whatever

Ah, now I see when you're arriving! Enjoy your trip. One more thing to add to my first list of suggestions:

The Metropolitan Museum of Art offers scavenger hunts. Check their website for days and times.

Another idea: Visit Katz Deli and Dylan Candy while you're here. It's a fun day for kids. You might like Chinatown too; it's a fascinating neighborhood.

You don't say where you're from - but do be sure the boys have clothes that are warm enough. More than a sprinkling of snow is unlikely - but you can easily get sleet, really cold rain and a lot of wind (funneled between the skyscrapers).
