NW Coast from San Fran to Portland

We are driving the coast road from San Fran to Portland, leaving in 2 weeks (family of 4). I am simply looking for any great tips on 'don't miss' sights, food or lodging. We do have lodging booked in San Fran, but nowhere else as we want to be a bit flexible. We LOVE good local food, doesn't have to be fancy. Many thanks.

How many days from the time you cross the GG bridge until you arrive in Portland?
If you are driving a rental car are you paying a drop off fee?
For northern CA coast I like the Ravenwood motel in Klamth.
See the Trees of Mystery if you don't spend much time in Redwood NP.
Are you driving all the way to Astoria and over US 30 to Portland? There are many great places to stop on the Oregon coast including Cannon Beach.

We will leave San Fran on Sunday and plan to arrive in Portland sometime Friday. No real decision on what route over to Portland from the coast. We are renting a car on Sunday morning in downtown San Fran and plan to drop it on the following Sunday at the airport in Portland as we depart. I have already booked the car. Thanks for your insight.

IF you go up 101 and IF the timing works out, try the Indian Creek Cafe at the north end of Gold Beach (right at the flashing yellow light). Good old down-home cookin' and the price is right.
