Now how about a great place to recommend around Florence Oregon?
I'm still working on recommendations for the people I mentioned in my post on Ilwaco/Seaview/Long Beach. As these friends drive down the Oregon coast, I'm thinking of their second night being around Florence.
It wouldn't be too long to drive, and will allow for short stops on the way. I've got two people in their 50's, very active, and two women in their 70, good shape, but bad knees. Is the Driftwood Resort decent? Looks right on the coast. They aren't really Motel 6 kinds of folks, beautiful scenery and lodges is what they have been asking me about. Any suggestions are appreciated! |
Easy... Overleaf Lodge in Yachats, a bit north of Florence. Beautiful place with crashing surf literally right outside the window. http://www.overleaflodge.com/
Another thought would be the B&B in the old lighthouse keepers house at Haceta Head. It's supposedly haunted. http://www.hecetalighthouse.com/ |
Its been awhile since I stayed at the Driftwood Shores - but it was OK when I stayed there. They do have a dining room with a great view although it seems I remember the service not being too good. There is a bar upstairs also with great view. Great beach for walking and close to Florence where there are some decent restaurants.
Agree with Beachbum that Overleaf would likely be nicer and there is a nice paved path for walking. Easy walk down to the Adobe Motel which is also not a bad place to stay - and the Adobe has a restaurant also. |

Beachbum you are the best! I'll have to tell them you are really the one planning this for them(: Thanks for the extra info sunbum.
Kal, I don't understand the clocks I'm afraid...am I a dim bulb? |
T2....not at all.
Just a non boring way of saying "tick tick tick" or "to the top" or TTT or just waitng for our resident drive by Ore expert to appear. ;;) |
Ah! Okay. I'm relieved.
I think I'm finished planning my pal's trip for the night. Now I want to go too! But, I will be on the Black River in SE Missouri at the time so all is not lost. |
Toucan 2- what are you doing on the Black River? My ex grew up in Ironton Mo so we have had many happy times on the Black River- Johnson Shuts In etc.
Beautiful part of the country |
Last June I took my niece on a road trip and we stayed at the Wilderness Lodge Resort down there. They sent us a gift certificate for a night that we have to use by this June so my husband and I are headed down for a long weekend (mind you, this is the weekend after I get back from vacation, I have a great boss!)
My husband is an avid birdwatcher so we are going in early May for some of the spring migration. We'll probably also visit Elephant Rocks, and see if the Shut Ins have recovered more from the Taum Sauk Resevoir break. I mainly intend to kick back and read trashy novels amidst nature(: I love that area, we've made a few road trips. It is indeed a bit of a trek though! |
Ah- what fond memories!
I think I remember posting about that area last year when you were going with your niece. Very beautiful and still not very commercialized part of the country. Hope the Shut Ins will be back - they had a big flood through there last year. Love Elephant Rocks |
Yes, I think you did post! It really is quite stunning and very few people seem to know about it. The lodge is quite rustic, which is okay with us(:

The Overleaf Lodge was perfect for us. Highly recommended!
