I like Lazy Days in Islamorada. An excellent ocean view deck with fine food. Reservations essential for dinner.
Nearby casual lunch at the Lorelei is recommended as well. In the marina setting with all outdoor seating.
Marathon's Seven Mile Café is an historic Keys casual stop.
Marathon also has the Florida Keys Fishery in a marina on the bay side with picnic table casual excellent fresh catch.
At MM 22 is Mangrove Mamas. Outdoor dining in the mangroves with excellent food.
You can understand that with walking the bridge from Marathon to Pigeon Key and feeding the tarpon at Robbie's near Islamorada and some kitschy shopping that the drive from KL to KW takes some time. Enjoy the trek as I prefer my time in the middle Keys to walking past tee shirt shops in Key West.

We just returned from a trip to Key West. We had a really good dinner at Square One (http://www.squareonekeywest.com/squa...restaurant.htm). I also agree with the suggestions above for Blue Heaven (especially for breakfast) and Olonzo's for happy hour/appetizers.

I doubt if there are many "not to be missed" eateries north of Key West. My experience, after two visits in the last two years, is that most places are overpriced and try too hard.
Like HPeabody, above, we are loyal patrons of Ma's Fish Camp. Not on the water, no fancy ambience, just friendly folks (ask for Winston) serving well-priced, fresh fish. Take a look at their blackboard listing the catch of the day (Ignore the salmon, obviously not local), and DO NOT ignore the Bahamian conch chowder--this was so good we took home a quart for the next day.
The Key Lime Pie at Ma's is legendary as being the best in the Keys.

And I do love my (fried) cracked conch, served here with Tartar and Russian dressing:

My perfect dinner at Ma's:
Bahamian conch chowder
Cracked conch or conch fritters if you can eat fried food
Catch of the day (Hopefully, mahi; but may be others I've not yet sampled..hope to return next winter!)
