I am also going at that time with some girlfriends. I read about a ferry trip from Middlebury (Shoreham) to NY. I would love to do this. Is it worth the time?? What can you do when you cross over to NY.

I talked to a photographer who made few reservations last year and as long as you lower your standards you "may" not have any troubles. He said they hit the local button on their gps and started calling all the close by places... BUT! If you are hoping to get wonderful little B&Bs each night then you will want to change the plan somewhat.
BK was on the money when he said pick a town to stay at for 2-3 days (like Concord) with lots of Hotels and then using your GPS (here's a funny note a gps is a great device to tell you where you are on the map and if you know the address of where you want to go it tells you how to get there but it can't tell you where a great scenic route is)

What you should get is a gazetteer from Delorme These map book have great detail and all sorts of points of interest... I find them to be indispensable and I also have a gps and I like to have both..

Hi Donna ~ If you like B&Bs there is also The Wilson House in East Dorset, Vermont (a village that is very tiny and beautiful). Going to The Wilson House feels like coming home, it's a big old place that's been an inn for quite a while. My dad actually works there once or twice a week, so if you go you'll probably talk to Jim H. at the front desk. The house doesn't advertise in any guidebooks, but they do have a site (thewilsonhouse.org).
If you go up the coast of Maine besure to visit Machias and Lubec, both great towns with things to see and do and lots of local flavor without a lot of "touristy-ness". My family was there last year and we loved it. Lubec also has the claim of being the easternmost town in the continental US.
Enjoy your trip! New England is a lovely place.
