Northern Lights in Wisconsin tonight

The Northern Lights are putting on a little show tonight here in Wisconsin. If you're in the North Country and you have a dark, clear sky tonight, you might want to take a look. Interestingly, much of it is directly overhead here.

Wow, that's cool. I thought you had to go to Alaska for Northern Lights. Do you have snow too?

I am over in Minnesota--Minneapolis--right in the city and we all saw the Northern Lights tonight as well. It was the first time in 20 years that we have lived here that we saw them. It was earlier here--6PM--lots of greens and even some reds directly overhead.
And there is not Snow here yet and I am certain that WI does not have snow yet either.

They were talking about it and showing it on the news tonight here in Chicago, at times like this I wished I lived somewhere I could see the stars.

We go to MN quite frequently and have seen them almost every year in N MN - even in the summer but they are best in the winter. Wish I was there now!!

If you can't see them from where you are, maybe this online gallery will help:

They put on quite the show last night.

We hadn't heard prior to jumping in the car & heading over to some friends for the end of the Bears game... rounded the corner to head north AND WOW!!

It appeared that they took up half the sky! The emerald green was brilliant... they were still dancing when I went to bed. >:D<

I'm curious... :?

Are the northern lights predictable??
...meaning, are they forecastable??

Everyone also seems to have a different "opinion" as to what causes them. What do you think??

We are in Northwest Washington State and had a great show last night as well. Our local TV station is predicting more for this week.

Vittrad, you don't have to go far to see great stars. Once you are about 30 miles outside the suburbs, it's totally amazing.

This weekend in Southwest Michigan the stars were the most visible in sheer numbers than I have seen in quite some time. It wasn't like out west in Montana but close. Just thousands and thousands of the varying sparklers, so dense that the blue/black of the sky seemed to be giving way.

It's worth checking out the North sky again tonight. Last night you could notice it from the inside of the house through the skylights. I thought I was having an electrical surge or something for awhile with the flicker.

I'm going to do my best from the city tonight and see if I can see something (I don't have a car). Wish me luck.

Hi Vittrad,

Find the absolute darkest spot possible in the city - maybe one of the parks - or try the lakefront as far north as you can go away from the city lights...

I'm in Antioch, right on the IL/WI border, and they were pretty bright... I'll be watching tonight as well!

A friend in Central WA reported seeing the Aurora last night, for the first time in his life.
