Northern Idaho and Montana tips needed
 

We are going to Coeur d'Alene, biz trip at the resort. I'd appreciate tips on things to do around that area. Also, we might take a few days and see some sights in Montana, but unfortunately there's not time for a long drive. My husband has never seen buffalo in the wild, I saw a herd on the run in South Dakota, I'll never forget it. Is there an area not too far where that might be possible? And other animals in the wild are always exciting too. We are early 60's and active, so a moderate hike is fine. Outdoor activities preferred but if there's something special that's indoors, I'd love to hear about it. Hotel, restaurants tips needed too if we take the Montana trip. Can you suggest an itinerary? The National Bison Range is not too far from Missoula, I think it is in Moiese and it might be worth a day trip.

Yes, I would recommend a visit to the National Bison Range near Moiese, MT, although it is about 2.5 hours from Coeur d'Alene . We were there last year and enjoyed it very much. In fact, we had a herd of bison walk right around our car as we drove on the wildlife loop! There are other wildlife to see in the park as well, but the bison were the most abundant and the easiest to see. The visitor's center has some good exhibits so be sure to stop there. In addition, there are two places that you can get out of your car for short uphill hikes which overlook the park. There's also a nice picnic area if you want to take a picnic lunch.

From the Bison Range you could continue on to Flathead Lake and Glacier NP.

From Bigfork, Kalispell, or Whitefish drive Going-to-the-Sun Road to Many Glaciers. Take the two-lake cruise and spend the night at Many Glacier Hotel. Drive back to the Flathead Lake area on the Going-to-the-Sun Road.

(Construction on the GTTSR creates longer delays than announced, but the drive is worth it.)
