I live in the Mendocino area now (but I was a tourist here first) and I would point you towards Brewery Gulch Inn, Albion River Inn or Heritage House for your comfort zone.

Just back from a great stay at Post Ranch. It's a no-brainer - 3 hrs from downtown San Francisco.

Routes 101-156-1.

The Brewery Gulch is a great property....but it's rather basic and rustic and across the road from the sea. Not luxury whatsoever.

For DH and I, our favorite getaway for that special occasion is Meadowood in the Napa Valley. True luxury.
