Northeast Christmas Vacation Ideas
Does anyone have an idea for a Christmas getaway in the northeast? We don't ski, so that's not an issue. We are also not looking to fky. We live in northern New Jersey and would prefer a driving vacation to go on during the Christmas week. TIA.

How about Montreal? It's a spectacular city.
Another thought would be Stowe, Vermont. Sure, Stowe is known for it's skiing, but there are lots of other activities as well-sleigh rides, snowshoeing, xcountry skiing. And, when in Rome, why not try alpine skiing? It's a blast.
Another thought, similar to Stowe, would be Lake Placid, NY. Lots of non-skiing winter activities there as well.

Montreal and Quebec City both sound great, but that's a long drive and if you hit bad weather, ugh.
A couple of suggestions: Connecticut countryside, staying at a beautiful in. Cape Ann in Massachusetts (not Cape Cod). Many beautiful inns and nice restaurants, could make a day trip to Boston.
Williamsburg, VA. It's not in the northeast, but close enough to NJ and very festive at Christmas.
Middlebury, Vermont. Very pretty small town, a stylish traditional hotel right in town and some excellent inns in the area. It's a short drive from there to Burlington or to several pretty Vermont villages.

The Green Mountain Inn in Stowe Vermont would be the perfect place for an old fashioned New England Christmas. It is a large Inn and is on the historic register. You will feel like you stepped back a couple of centuries (sp) if you stay here. Take a sleigh ride. We did this and our horses name was Sally. She just meanders slowly through the lamp lit fields. There is so much more to Stowe than skiing. You would not be disappointed if this was your choice.
While you are there you can take a ride a little further up and visit the Von Trapp family lodge. It is very beautiful. You are high upon the mountain and feel as though you are in Austria or Switzerland. You can see for miles and miles over the Green Mountains. We are from Boston but love to get up there whenever we can.
