North Western Virginia Itinerary Suggestions

Hello! We will be going to Warrenton, VA for a wedding in mid-October. We would like to add a couple of days to see some interesting sites and do fun activities in the general area. We are driving from New England so we don't want to go a whole lot farther south than Warrenton. Suggestions? We like the outdoors, adventures and some historical. Not big museum people. Thanks!

From Warrenton, Shenandoah National Park is about 45 min-1hr southwest, mostly west. The Skyline Drive would be beautiful that time of year, likely peak fall foliage. You have two resorts in that area of the park to choose from, Big Meadows or Skyland. A couple hikes I would recommend in that area are Doyle River Falls, Hawksbill Summit, Dark Hollow Falls, and White Oak Canyon. Just outside the western edge of the park is Luray, which has Luray Caverns and are worth a visit. Not sure if you are wanting to stray that far west from Warrenton, but the park and Luray would definitely offer plenty of outdoors options.

I agree with Luray Caverns. Are you willing to drive as far as Harpers Ferry for that "some historical" or would you prefer to visit some closer Presidential home or birthplace?

You could do some wine tasting.

You can return home via Harper's Ferry, Gettysburg, and Lancaster County, PA.

This route is pleasant, almost traffic free compared to the I-95 corridor.

If you are driving to Western Connecticut on I-84, I have further suggestions from our recent trip.

Thanks for the feedback! To answer the questions, yes, we would be willing to drive up to Harper's Ferry, I've just started looking into that. Any recommendations there?

And, yes, we will be driving along I-84 through CT.
