North Shore Kauai Rental Advice Please!

We have been to Kauai before and know we (2 of us) want to stay on the north shore, preferably very close to Hanalei. My first vrbo.com choice was booked, and I moved on to #26321, Hale Maile. I contacted the owner via e-mail and she responded saying the four nights in June 2007 that I wanted were completely open.
I wrote back asking to make the reservation- and called her number in California and left a message - but she has not replied. Just in case she doesn't confirm my reservation (maybe she's holding out for a longer rental), I'm now looking for backups.

So does anyone have experience with either the guest house just off Wainiha Beach (#75847) or the house which is listed as #10210?

We don't want to exceed $150 per night and don't need much room but would like to be within walking distance of a beach, being within walking distance of Hanalei Town would be a plus. We do not want to stay on Princeville Resort.

I greatly appreciate all help! Thanks!

#75847 is a large polehouse, which is divided into separately rented rooms -- lovely place. And yes, there is a beach within strolling distance, but it's non-swimmable (year 'round rip currents and pounding surf).

#10210 -- no address given, so I can't tell if it's on the beach (makai) or mountain (mauka) side of the highway. Ask the owner for specific location. If it's on the beach side of the highway, go for it!

Hi Postal,

You might want to look at #18278. We are staying there this summer.

Thanks, Bill. That was our first choice but it was booked during our time there.

auntiemaria, they say it is a "short stroll" to Tunnels. Do you know how far that short stroll would be? And is it about five miles to Hanalei or less than that? Thanks!

Postal:

Which property are you asking about?

#75847 (Wainiha) is close to one mile from Makua Beach (often mistakenly called "Tunnels" by those unaware of the importance of using the original Hawaiian names). Not a short stroll in my book! :-)

And yes, it's about 5 miles from Hanalei -- 10 minutes or so by car.

Thanks for your help, auntiemaria! Yes, the Wainiha property is advertised as being a "short stroll" to the beach. That's exactly the type of thing I'm trying to avoid - short strolls of one mile or more!

I don't know why we haven't heard back from the Hale Maile owner, but hopefully will soon. I checked out that location on Google Earth and it looks fine. Two blocks at most to Hanalei Bay.

auntiemaria, you're the best. ((y)) Sorry I missed the GTG the other day. I couldn't even get it on the webcam for some reason. It was blocked, or maybe it was my browser setting.

Anyway, did Kal behave himself? :-) ((b))

Budman:

Kal? Behave himself?? Surely you jest!! :-D
