North or South Rim/Bryce/Zion
 

Going to Las Vegas for a convention and will have half days free as well as one full day. <BR> <BR>I'd appreciate some input from the Fodorites as far as how I might spend my 'downtime.' <BR> <BR>The South Rim is 5 hours from Vegas. Zion is about 2 1/2 hours. I know I can't see all of it, but would like some recommendations as to how I might maximize my time there. I'm interested in taking maybe an hour long 'easy' hike on a paved trail. <BR> <BR>Thanks for all suggestions!

Nancy, The longest you say you'll have free is one full day (not overnight also?) For your half days have you considered Valley of the Fire St. Park and Red Rock Canyon. Of the Parks you listed I might consider Zion or the South Rim (if you've never seen the Grand Canyon)for a day trip--very long day. I was in Zion in late May and the temperatures were already in the 102 F range. Also, you must park your car and take a shuttle bus if you want to see the main part of the canyon. The North Rim is a long drive from Las Vegas. <BR>So is the south rim.

Hi, Nancy, <BR>You don't say when your convention is, and that can make a big difference. <BR> <BR>Unless you want to take one of the ubiquitous flying tours, I think the Grand Canyon is just too far for one day. Zion is a maybe, Bryce Canyon too, but still a lot of driving. Unfortunately I think one of the reasons Las Vegas does so well is that it pretty well traps you in its air conditioned and traffic congested self, unless you're prepared to invest a number of hours to get somewhere else. <BR> <BR>The exception which I would recommend either for a half or full day outing is Hoover Dam and Lake Mead. Fabulous landscapes and a jaw-dropping bit of human achievement. Tour the powerhouse and behold.

Thanks for the ideas. I'll be there next week. I live in the northern Midwest and don't do well in high temperatures. That may have an impact on going to Zion, even though it is closest. I'm not inclined to take the air tours of the Grand Canyon due to $$$. But I will have a car. <BR> <BR>I think I might take the advice of Lake Mead/Hoover Dam and Red Rock Canyon. <BR> <BR>All ideas are welcome! Thanks!
