North Kohala Beaches in February - Too rough to swim?

I have never been to Hawaii in February and I have read in several places that the surf can be very rough. We are heading to the Big Island (staying at Marriott then Hapuna Prince - work related reason for the switch mid-trip) the first week in February and I am wondering if the water is predictably too rough to swim at this time of year or whether it is generally fine unless you have the misfortune of being there at a time of high surf? In other words is it hit or miss or should we not even plan for any beach swimming? How are the beaches at those two hotels for winter surf and do you recommend any others? My husband is a very strong swimmer but I am not (or at least am more nervous). Thanks

Your best bet for ocean swimming will probably be at "A'Bay" by the Marriott, which is a bit more protected from the strong wave action.

I don't think you can make a gobal statement that all swimming will be bad in February. It's a day by day decision. On iffy days I would check Spencers as it is very protected from the north waves. I would also check the boathouse beach at the Muana Lani. I also agree with A bay.

We swim at Hapuna and Kaunaoa year round; it's just going to be more variable in the winter and have a greater chance for bigger surf.

Update - A Bay was great for us - very calm and clear and fun to take our young daughter in. We also were fine at Hapuna. The waves got bigger later in the day but was generally fine and a beautiful beach.
