Would anyone know of a clean, affordable hotel or inn on the North Fork where a couple and an eight y/o can stay a night or two?

Yes. I may be able to do mid-week. Instead of Montauk pt. we were considering using Orient Beach park. So perhaps Mattituck or Southold?

I looked online at a few places that I am familiar with and the prices were higher than you want to spend. If I were you, I might try Riverhead, which has a few national chain hotels including Hilton Garden Inn and Holiday Inn. It's only about 35minutes from there to the State Park and you an pass all the farmstands and wineries on the way so it is a pleasant drive, along either Rte 48 or Rte 25. (We call these "the north road" and "the south road" respectively).

But you can check further, not only in Mattituck and Southold, but also in East Marion (closer to the Park) and Greenport.
