North Florida beaches in March

We are looking for recommendations on good places to stay along the Atlantic coast of North Florida (between Jacksonville and Cape Canaveral). We are interested in being close to good beaches for swimming. We will be there in March and want to avoid major spring breakers destinations. Thanks for any advice you can give us.

My top pick would be Crescent Beach, mentioned on your other thread. It's quiet, family-friendly and has soft, white sand. It also lacks the crowds of Volusia County beaches (e.g. Daytona & New Smyrna Beaches) to the south. It is within easy driving distance from many good dining options in St. Augustine. A nice place to stay is Beachers Lodge http://www.beacherslodge.com Be sure to ask for a 3rd or 4th floor King sized unit for best ocean views.

Someone in Fl check it for me, but from my memory of when my folks lived in Vero, I didn't swim much in the ocean in March. Just a thought.

March would be pretty cool for swimming in northern FL. Even as far south as Vero, which Gretchen mentions, it's too cold for me, even in April. We used to see some tourists swimming in March and April around Clearwater when we lived there, but I suspect they were folks who were accustomed to much colder water normally. We were with friends the end of March in Indialantic this past spring and of the 6 of us, only one went in and she was from England.

Gretchen,
You are right. The ocean water will be too cold for swimming...unless you're Canadian. However, sunning on the beach, taking walks along the beach or swimming in a heated pool should be fine.

An addendum to my comment about Crescent Beach above. Book early. Bike Week in Daytona is March 4-13, 2011 and it will be so crowded that many will seek lodging as far north as St. Augustine.

Thanks for the info re: cold water temps. What beach towns would you recommend staying in even without the swimming?

When in March? Orlando_Vic is right, unless you're a biker, avoid that week. Daytona Beach Shores and Ponce Inlet, both just south of Daytona, proper, are quieter than Daytona Beach. Ormond Beach, just north of Daytona Beach (all of these towns are contiguous) is also quieter. These towns will not be crowded that time of the year, unless you run into Spring Breakers, but they mostly congregate in Daytona Beach. Us Crackers don't hit the water until about late, May, but a lot of people from more northern climes do. The sand at the beaches in the Daytona Beach area is a lot whiter and neater than the more northern Florida beaches like St. Augustine, Jax area and Amelia Island.

There are no northern Fla. beaches that would be guaranteed swimmable in March. Use this for historic temps http://www.wunderground.com/tripplanner/index.asp
