North-East trip Ideas

Taking our daughter to a summer course in Rhod Island, we are driving from Chicago next month, and looking for some "must See" ideas along the way and especially in New England area.
We have a week to spend.
Also some neat, inexpensive B&B info would be appreciated...
Thanks much, Amik.

If you are going to be in Rhode Island, I would suggest spending a day in Newport. Tour the mansions (or "cottages" as they were called by the owners).

Since you are from the midwest, you should make your way over to Cape Cod and do some ocean things (beach, seafood, boating, etc). There's also a lot of summer activites, outdoor concerts, etc. My favorite towns are from Chatham to Provincetown (especially Truro). Coast Guard Beach in Eastham was recently crowned the best beach in America by the Wall Street Journal.

You also cannot come all the way to the east without visiting Boston. Like Chicago, it is big, but feels like a smaller city. Any guidebook can give you 1000 things to do in Boston, but the highlights are historical and cultural (battle sites, museums, etc.). Boston also has great restaurants and shopping. From downtown you can also hop on a boat and do a whale watch (something your kids will never see in Chicago!). These enormous whales sometimes come within feet of the boat (but they are very gentle and slow moving, so fear not).

I will leave it to others to make suggestions for the "must-sees" in the Indiana to Connecticut part of your drive. Have a great trip!

Hi:
Hugh gave you a great vacation itinerary (hope I spelled it right) for jaunts to Newport, Cape Cod and Boston. I will only suggest that if you plan to go to Provincetown on the Cape then take the Whale Watch from there as it is much closer to where the whales are and Ptown is a great place to visit by itself.

Gene

Thanks, guys.
Could somebody also suggest a neat B&B in or around Providence? It seems that we'll spend a few days there.
Thanks, Amik.

Hello again:
High on a hill, overlooking Cape Cod Bay, at the very tip of P-town is the Lands End Inn. This place is very unique, with its beautiful gardens, interior furnishings, and great location. Go to capecodlife.com to get more info. on this B&B and others in Provincetown.

Sorry, Amik, thought you wrote that you would be spending 2 days in Provincetown on Cape Cod not Providence, RI (UGH! hot and grimy city). I don't know of any B&B's in Providence. Hey, maybe you can change your schedule around and spend those two days in Provincetown instead...

Gene
