North Carolinians- help me decide what route to take from High Point to Flat Rock

I am going to be on a business trip in High Point on Thursday and would like to make an overnight visit to Flat Rock for a play. Looking at the map of NC I can see there are two options of getting to Flat Rock.
1. Take route I-40 West to I-26 South
2. Take route I-85 West (?) to route 74 West(but this not a highway?) to I-26 North.

What route would be quickest and least congested with trucks?
Thank you for your help

I'd go I-40 if I wanted the quickest route. Least congested with trucks? No idea, but I'd rather be on interstate than limited access highways if I was concerned about trucks.

Have you been to Asheville before? If not, I'd definitely take that route and make a short detour - or even have dinner in Asheville. Then, you are only a hop, skip and a jump from Hendersonville. (Okay, 20 miles, but not far at all).

Definitely take I-40 and I-26.

Say hello to everyone in Flat Rock for me -- I spent three wonderful summers at the Playhouse there -- about a thousand years ago.

Agree with others. There are plenty of truck traffic on both I-40 and I-85, but not only do you have to take a stretch of non-freeway US74, but you also have to pass through Charlotte.

Just watch out for slow trucks on the climb to Black Mtn on I-40, just east of Asheville. It's one of the steepest stretches of interstates on the E. Coast.

Thank you all for your help. As you suggested I should take I-40 to I-26. I can't wait to experience the climb to Black Mtn on I-40.

Since you are already on I40 that is the logical way.
As for Route 74, let it be known that this is a gorgeous 4 lane highway that is usually totally deserted. No trucks no cars!!
It is essentially 6 of one and half a dozen of another.
The drive up I26 from the Green River is much the same as Old Fort mountain on I40 with a beautiful view of the valley below.
I also think you will have more truck traffic on I40 but it moves along.

I just looked at the map on Mapquest. If you really need to get there the quickest way I would advise you to take I40 to US221 and drop south to I74W to I26. I hadn't viewed Flat Rock as that far south of Asheville. I have taken 221 many times in the past taking our boys to camp in Black Mountain. It is about 25 miles between the two roads and will not be terribly slow. But it will cut off miles and miles and miles.
As I said Route 74 is a beautiful 4 lane highway with little traffic.

The OP probably had made a decision. It's Thursday - so a decision has definitely been made by now.

Just in case -

Marion to Flat Rock via interstate -
63 miles - mapquest says 1 hour 14 minutes

Marion to Flat Rock via Rutherford -
24 + 42 = 66 miles
35 + 48 minutes = 1 hour 23 minutes

Mileage-wise, it looks like a toss-up. Time-wise, I guess it depends on traffic. The "final answer" will probably depend on an individual's preference on roads.

Yes, both of those roads are a tossup. My "miles and miles" was the Asheville route. Have done both Rutherford and Marion in the past.
