North Carolina weather in June/July
Looking for information about the weather in the mountainous areas of North Carolina in June and July. Is there much rain? Wildflowers? How hot/cool is it up in the mountains? Humidity? Thanks in advance.

Beachjaunt, the NC mountains are gorgeous...... all year. In June and July, you will have t-shirt weather during the day, and occasionally even need a light sweater at night. Frequent, short bursts of rain, keeping it beautiful and green (normally....... unless some freaky weather pattern is going on that year).......and then the sun pops rights back, in all it's glory. Lower humidity, as a rule. I live in Raleigh, where you sometimes think you're residing in HELL by June and especially July. But when it's, say, 92 here, it's 82 in the mountains in Roaring Gap where my sister lives, and cooler than that at the college in Boone. I spend a week every July in Linville Falls, and visit my sister as often as I can think of a reason!;-)
Plan on loving it!:-) (And yes, there certainly are wildflowers!!!!!!) |
Beachjaunt, here's a good link for you with NC weather stats:

Bonnie has pretty-much nailed the Asheville weather. Close to 10 degrees cooler than the low-lying areas (like Greenville, SC). It may well be humid, however.
In June, Rhododendron should still be blooming. Blackberries will start in the end of June and the wild raspberries are ripe in July. If you hike on some gravel roads (they need sunlight...dense forest singletrack trails won't have raspberries) you can pick the best berries you have ever eaten. The wildflowers are going berserk now, and should still be going strong in mid-summer. |
Litespeed_Chick, let's face it....... we live in God's land here!:-) After all, the sky IS Tarheel blue. Nothing like our mountains in summer..... Do you ever get to Raleigh in summer for some REAL humidity??? YIKES!

I have been to Raleigh, but my favorite miserable summer story was once when I was at a horse show in Columbia.
I overheard a little boy say to his Mom, "can't we go stand in the shade?" and she says "honey, I don't think they HAVE shade in Columbia." |
I went to summer school one year in Columbia at USC and it was the most unbearable, miserable, horrible summer I ever had.
The official tempurature reached 100 degrees 28 days in July that year. Hell. |
We spend a month in Cashiers every summer and last year we actually built a fire one night! I should mention that I've lived in FL my entire life and anything under 70 is cold to me!

I love your story, Litespeed_Chick! We can get some heat here in the Carolinas, for sure. When we moved back here 13 years ago, after being "up North" for many, many years......... moving day was June 21, and it was 99 degrees with humidity you could slice!!! I said to my DH that I'd forgotten that I was "born and raised in HELL!":-)

Warm enough for sunburn in day, nice and cool in evenings. Beautiful with delicious food.

Quit! You guys are causing me xanxiety. I am here in miserable, hot, humid Atlanta running the business while my wife, mother-in-law and son are at our mountain home in NC! Btw I spent 9 weeks in basic training at Ft. Jackson (Columbia). I'll never forget that my socks and my fatigues added 20 pounds in water alone by 8:00AM!

Smokyboy, I feel your pain! I stay aggravated all summer here in sweltering Raleigh, knowing my sister is living in those gorgeous mountains over there....... :-<
